Description

About the Book

"Many students in social work and other human services programs are less than enthusiastic about research. We often hear new students ask the following question: "Why am I required to study research methods when I just want a career helping people?" We argue that being a competent researcher is critically important to human services professionals. Research can help professionals determine which interventions will most help clients. Understanding research is also necessary in evaluating our work-to determine whether our programs, policies, and practices are effective and efficient. We also argue that understanding research methods can help professionals in every stage of the practice-from engaging clients or communities, to assessing problems and resources, to selecting interventions and monitoring progress, to evaluating outcomes and integrating findings in enhancing our programs, services, and policies. Research also provides a framework for understanding how services work, which enables human services professionals to explain them to those outside the profession"--
