About a week before her mother died author Tish McAllise Sjoberg asked her if she had any regrets. The answer was yes, her mother had
always wanted to become an artist. After 73 years, that was her regret. Not that she had done something terrible or wronged someone, but that she wronged herself in an almost invisible way. Always putting others' needs and wants first, she never became who she wanted to be.
Her mother's regret became fuel for her own creative path. Tish thought she too could die without realizing her dream of becoming an artist. In a commitment to honor her mother's life and regret, and to not let a single day go by where she didn't honor her own desire to be an
artist Tish embarked on her first 365 Days of Art project. She committed to make art every day for a year and McAllise Sjoberg never stopped. At publication of this book she celebrates of 20 years of making art daily.
"Artist is a verb. We don't become an artist and then do art, we do art and then begin to feel like an artist."-Tish McAllise Sjoberg
Review Quotes
"I just love this book. I will buy a dozen copies! Tish has given the world a gift with this book. It's a gift that we can give to ourselves, a tool to help us explore our own creativity one day at a time. And all this process asks of us is five minutes a day. Five minutes to draw or dance or write or sing or play with whatever creative impulse intrigues you. Tish's book shows you how to get into that practice and stay there, for fun and for life."
-Graham Yost Film and television writer for Justified, Silo, and Speed
"Between the covers of Artist is a Verb are more than 365 daily readings of encouragement, information, ideas, inspiration, support, and resources to living a life of making art on a daily basis. Tish McAllise Sjoberg doesn't just tell us how to do it; she shares how she created such a life for herself. She is a generous teacher, wise mentor, compassionate friend, and lively cheerleader. This book will be my daily art-making companion; I can't wait to begin."
-Judy Reeves, author of A Writer's Book of Days, Wild Women, Wild Voices, and When Your Heart Says Go
"As a writer, I know very well how lonely the creative process can be. Despite the company of a fellow writer or a group of readers who are kind enough to offer their support, the actual act of making something where there was once nothing requires the creator to step into the wasteland, alone and untethered, battling the forces of inertia, doubt, and disillusionment. Artist is a Verb is a lifeline for the creator. It offers help, hope, encouragement, empathy, and a much-needed friend for the arduous, foolhardy, creative journey."
-Matthew Dicks, internationally bestselling author of Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend: A Novel, Storyworthy, Someday Is Today, and 56-time Moth StorySLAM champion and 9-time GrandSLAM champion
"Whether you secretly long for a more creative life or are a full-fledged working artist (or anything in between), Tish's encouraging daily voice in your ear will guide you to follow your heart's desire, and gently remove every obstacle in the way of cultivating a creative practice. Becoming a daily artist takes only five minutes a day. But with Tish's inspiration, I bet you'll find yourself doing much more."
