Q: Do I need to boil the noodles?

submitted by Lafoll95 - 11 months ago
  • A: I had a hard time getting them to cook through in the lasagna. My best advice is to at least wet them before layering.

submitted by Jeanne - 4 years ago
  • A: Yes! Assemble the lasagne in a freezer/oven safe container, cover tightly, then freeze. ❄️ When you're ready to eat, defrost it in the fridge for 24 hours, then bake at 375°F for about 70 minutes. Check out more lasagne prep tips here! http://bit.ly/2Takx4P

Not a good gluten free option

I rarely review and yes this is silly because it’s just a box of noodles 😆…but this being the only option I could find for gluten free lasagna for my hubs who has celiac disease, it could be helpful if someone else happens to discover other options besides this one. It says no need to boil and to fully cover with sauce for the layers…nope 😂🙃. They barely cook, still pretty firm and hard even with lots of sauce and baking covered. Either try something else if you can find other options, or maybe try actually boiling the noodles?

    Not Worth The Effort

I used this to make lasagna fir my son- who is now gluten free. He appreciated my efforts but asked me never to serve it again and I happen to agree. Even after paying special attention to using a glass baking dish, enough sauce to create the proper "cooking moisture," and making certain my ingredients were quality ones this recipe falls flat on its face. It's an embarrassment to call it Italian food. In fairness to Barillas test kitchen to create something gluten free that should NEVER be eaten gluten free, I attempted this a second time and the consensus of this Italian family is that the recipe falls short of taste and is not enjoyable. Sorry- we truly tried. It looked beautiful too/ but that doesn't help a tasteless recipe. Ps/ if you still try this dish/ do NOT use an aluminum pan/ you will severely scorch the bottom.

Boil first! Add more sauce! Voila, delish!

Wow, pleasantly surprised. I’ve been experimenting with GF pasta because I LOVE pasta but GF is hard. However, this hits the mark! I took advice from a recipe: boil 8 minutes while stirring to avoid them sticking to each other (even though it says oven ready), I’m happy I did this. Trust me, it doesn’t turn out mooshy. Also based on recommendations, add more sauce than you normally do following a standard recipe. I used 2 jars of Marinara sauce, about 3 tablespoons tomato paste (half or little more of a 6oz can), and 1 8oz can of tomato sauce. Kids and husband didn’t even question me if it was GF!!

I have used this pasta many times

I love this pasta! The recipe on the box depends on the sauce you use. I like to make my own sauce and when using it with this pasta, I add water to help soften the pasta while baking. I've used Classico marinara with success, but I use a lot more sauce than the box recipe says. I have a large lasagna baking dish and I usually use a box and a half of pasta to make enough layers.

    Couldn't tell the difference!

Last summer I baked lasagna for 125 campers and counselors at a summer camp. While baking the lasagna, we failed to mark the pan that was gluten free. Hilarity ensued as we recruited several counselors and campers to figure out which of the 10 pans was gluten free. We looked, we cut, we did blind taste tests, argued, debated, and in the end, we figured it out, but only---and after much debate---after noticing one pan had noodles with a slightly different color than the other pans. The quality of the Barilla gluten free noodles lives on in the lore of our camp food stories even a year later.

Good GF product but I'm always short one noodle!

I must cook GF. very happy with the no boil GF lasagna noodles. I use a glass pan. The noodles would be softer if you use more than 1 cup of sauce in each layer. My only complaint is the box seems to always be short one noodle sheet! 4 on the bottom, and 4 in each subsequent layer. But the last layer -only 3 left in the box! Am I doing something wrong? Or are some boxes short?

Great GF option, problems with logistics

The pasta is great, but the package comes with 11 sheets, making it impossible to make a full lasagna without a second box. Also the box advertises it for a 9x13 dish which the sheets are not sized for

    DO BOIL!!!

Glad I read the reviews before using for the first time - I boiled the Lasagne until nearly done and them built it (layered sauce, peppers, onions, cheese, ground turkey -all stir fried first. Then, into an 8x8 square glass dish - buttered sides. I baked for 40 minutes with a pizza pan as a cover. Husband loved it - makes 4 good sized servings.

Almost had to toss whole sheet of lasagna

I bought the gluten free lasagna by mistake and agree with several reviews here that the recipe instructions need to be revised. When I checked the lasagna after I took the foil off, the noodles were hard and curving up. I remedied this by covering the noodles with sauce, putting the foil back on, lowering the temperature to 300, cooking for another 15 minutes and letting it rest covered for 15 minutes. 375 is too high for these noodles and lots of sauce needs to cover each layer. I won't use gluten free again.

    Boil First!

After reading everyone’s reviews before making my lasagna, I chose to parboil for 4min. So glad I did, it turned out great! You could even boil for 5min. I’ll continue to use these for sure, no one could tell the difference!

    shorter than the average lasagna

I use oven-ready lasagna noodles to make small lasagna in an 8x4 bread pan. Makes two decent servings. I have always used the traditional oven ready noodles. The gluten free noodles, while tasting fine, are shorter than the traditional ones and do not come any where near to reach the ends of the pan.

Great tasting, easy to use gf lasagna noodles. The only recommendation I have is to not follow the directions as exactly written on the box, leave the foil on at least 10 minutes longer.

    Needs to be pre-boiled!

Even though it says you don’t have to precook this pasta, I would parboil it at least. I followed the directions exactly and they are still half hard. Dinner ruined. I have another box I will be using next week but will boil it first. Gave it 2 stars but recommended so long as you boil it.
