Description
Book Synopsis
Bible and Bedlam first critically questions the exclusion and stereotyping of certain biblical characters and scholars perceived as 'mad', as such judgements illustrate the 'sanism' (prejudice against individuals who are diagnosed or perceived as mentally ill) perpetuated within the discipline of Western biblical studies. Second, it seeks to highlight the widespread ideological 'gatekeeping' - 'protection' and 'policing' of madness in both western history and scholarship - with regard to celebrated biblical figures, including Jesus and Paul. Third, it initiates creative exchanges between biblical texts, interpretations and contemporary voices from 'mad' studies and sources (autobiographies, memoirs etc.), which are designed to critically disturb, disrupt and displace commonly projected (and often pejorative) assumptions surrounding 'madness'. Voices of those subject to diagnostic labelling such as autism, schizophrenia and/or psychosis are among those juxtaposed here with selected biblical interpretations and texts.Review Quotes
"The latest work from the prolific pen of Lawrence constitutes scholarship of the highest caliber. Her study is well conceived, carefully argued, and provocative in the best sense of the term ... It will be of particular attraction to those with interdisciplinary research interests, including those whose work focuses on disability, gender, postcolonialism, and reception history." --Religious Studies Review
"The fresh insights advanced by this book, as well as its challenging impetus, make it a welcome contribution to the ongoing ideological and meta-critical analysis of biblical studies ... The book breaks new ground by initiating several important and timely conversations. It demands a wide readership and engagement." --Review of Biblical Literature "Lawrence does, however, succeed in urging care when it comes to assessing the moti-vations of long-dead subjects, biblical or otherwise." --The Catholic Biblical QuarterlyAbout the Author
