About the Book
Praised for acting like a big girl when she is small, as a young girl grows, "big" becomes a word of criticism, until the girl realizes that she is fine just the way she is.Book Synopsis
Filled with truth, beauty, joy, and acceptance, this is a tour de force from bestselling and award-winning creator Vashti Harrison. The first picture book written and illustrated by award-winning and creator Vashti Harrison traces a child's journey to self-love and shows the power of words to both hurt and heal. With spare text and exquisite illustrations, this emotional exploration of being big in a world that prizes small is a tender portrayal of how you can stand out and feel invisible at the same time.About the Author

I see some reviews felt that the words were harmful (but that was the point). I related to this when I was younger and I believe at the proper age and proper guidance, this book would really help with loving one’s body and/or be considerate of others. It’s illustrating a reality of what some kids face. It’s not for everyone, but when the time is right I will definitely talk to my child about this and read it to them when they’re mature enough.
Good intention, poor delivery.

I get what the author was trying to say. But delivery didn’t match intention. I do think it can still be useful for some readers who go/went through the little girl’s experience exactly, but that’s about it.
A Masterpiece!

This is a powerful picture book with a BIG message. I found it unique in that it delivers this message in a way that will resonate with readers of all ages. My 2, 4, 6, and 8 year olds all listened with interest and concern for the girl in the story. It evoked a lot of feelings in myself, a middle aged woman who grew up feeling like I was too big and that I needed to shrink into the background. It’s amazing how many adults think children should be big enough to know better when they’re just acting like children. This book is great because it doesn’t turn the mean kids or teachers into villains, but it’s obvious that they are inflicting pain and are not acting with compassion and kindness. The act of giving their hurtful words back is powerful. This is a book I will be recommending to everyone!
Very specific interest group.

This title was beautifully written and brilliantly illustrated. I enjoy reading this story to my daughter and she loves bringing it to me to read. Never allow others to dim your light no matter their opinions. To the reviewer who said she closed the book prior to getting to the end of the story did her daughter a grave disservice. In today’s time, voices are constantly trying to make you doubt yourself and your shine when they feel inferior themselves. Every person, boy or girl - woman or man, should reflect and remember these words and images wrapped into a wondrous book titled BIG.

I love this book. I read it while in store and it instantly bought tears to my eyes because I could resonate with the main character. I can’t wait to gift this to my god daughter. I wish there was a book like this when I was younger that could help me feel more secure about my size. Being teased for being larger than others is something that many children struggle with & learning to love and accept yourself for who you are makes it a little easier. I definitely think that this book would be great for having a discussion with kids that are struggling with being teased about their size.

This book was NOT made in a good image of any kids who are bigger than others! As I read this book to my daughter I immediately said! No, this is going back to the store!
