Scientific images can legitimize patient experiences and perceptions and convince doctors in the search for a diagnosis, treatment or cure. But they can also be deceptive messengers, generating new forms of epistemic uncertainty and increasing rates of misdiagnosis, unnecessary interventions and healthcare inequalities.
