A Woodworking Magazine Top 40 Book

Now revised and expanded with 32 pages of color and an updated resources section, this 70,000-copy international bestseller, known as the 'Bible of canoe building' is back, bigger and better than ever.

Ted Moores is a master builder of woodstrip/epoxy canoes. Over four decades teaching wooden-boat construction, he discovered that the same dream motivates all of his students, no matter their age: to build something beautiful and functional.

Canoecraft is the road map to that dream. Moores offers comprehensive instructions for the first-time builder, and for the second-time builder. He adds a variety of canoe plans, each presented as a traditional table of offsets. There is also a series of builder's tips and techniques, and an entire chapter on carving a paddle, the perfect accompaniment to a handcrafted canoe.

Whether the goal is to build a general-purpose recreational canoe, or an efficient modern tripping canoe, or a full-decked fast-cruising canoe with walnut veneer, Canoecraft is the ideal guide to making it happen successfully.

Review Quotes

Will show you how to build a beautiful, modern canoe that can be built by anyone with a minimum of woodworking skills.-- "Daily Star" (11/21/2022 12:00:00 AM)

(review of previous edition) Canoecraft is a book every hobbyist will want. As the world gets filled with more and more mass produced, plastic everything, there is a growing interest in and demand for beautiful, handcrafted, wooden articles... In Canoecraft he shows how anyone can build a cedar strip canoe using a minimum number of carpentry tools and woodworking skills. He starts the book with a history of canoes, considers shape and function, and provides the plans for seven designs. The construction portion of the book covers producing the strips, setting up the mould frames, building the hull, and adding the trim. The final chapter covers finishing the canoe and maintenance and repair. Canoecraft is well illustrated and clearly written. The directions instill confidence in the reader and would-be builder. The author feels that with this book a fourteen-year-old could produce a beautiful canoe. It is a step-by-step guide to building an uncomplicated classic canoe and should be in the collection of every woodworker and in every high school and public library.--Peter Chernoff "Canadian Review of Materials" (5/1/1984 12:00:00 AM)

An excellent definitive book ... something you must read if you are going to build a woodstrip canoe.-- "Canoeist" (7/1/2001 12:00:00 AM)

If you are planning to build a canoe or just want to learn about how to do it, buy this book. I think I need to say that again. Buy this book. This is the ultimate book about building wood strip canoes, plus it has the lines and offsets for the Freedom 17 included in the book. This boat is one of the best for wilderness tripping. The plans are worth more than the book itself.--Bryan Hansel "Paddling Light" (5/1/2020 12:00:00 AM)

If you have dreamed of building your own canoe you will want to check out Ted Moores' book Canoecraft... The informative text is complemented by numerous colour and black and white photographs along with illustrations and tables.--Glenn Perrett "Toronto.com" (4/29/2021 12:00:00 AM)

If you want to build a strip-plank canoe -- or kayak -- Canoecraft is the book to buy... All in all a very comprehensive boatbuilding book and highly recommended.--Pete Greenfield "Water Craft" (3/1/2004 12:00:00 AM)
