I am not a professional, but could tell immediately the professional quality of this lens. It ads a new dimension in composition with its extremely shallow depth of field. Automatic focus is truly a snap. I've shot outdoor portraits of grandchildren and the outcomes are brilliant. Couldn't be more pleased with this lens. Price is relative when considering how often you will use this lens and the quality of the resulting pictures.
Holy smokes.

I rented this lens a week ago. I was weary about purchasing such a weighty lens(both literal weight and price-wise.) Long story short, I bought this lens after my first shoot. I ended up really loving the weight of the lens! The autofocus is silent and super pristine. It will be a great addition to my business! I couldn't be more impressed with Canon!

Quite simply...this is an outstanding lens. Typical Canon quality I have come to expect after shooting Canon for 30+ years. This is a marked improvement over the 85mm 1.2 II. Lighter, and faster focusing, not to mention the added Image Stabilization...a great tool to have. I do not notice much of a loss of Bokeh from the 1.2 to 1.4 f stop. Color and Contrast are wonderful! The IS really works as I can typically shoot handheld down to 1/25 or 1/15 with no issues. Adding this to my 5D MKIV or my EOS R makes a perfect walking around lens, and for studio use it really shines. Add this lens to your gear, you won't be disappointed.

This is literally the best portrait lens ever made, period. The build is solid and top notch quality, the image stabilization is cutting edge, auto-focus is spectacular. Opened all the way up to f/1.4 you can really create those "dreamy" backgrounds, not just bokeh, but something magical to it (about 95% of the f/1.2 counterpart). Stopped down to f/1.8 - f/4 and you can still get great subject to background separation with excellent bokeh, while keeping your subject entirely sharp. At f/2.8 - f/4 you can get pretty much your entire subject sharp, with still a great blurred background. The color rendition, contrast, natural saturation, are all fantastic right out of camera. While it's a touch on the heavy side, the ergonomics are great and it's way better than the 85mm f/1.2 predecessor. It's definitely a tank compared to the old school 85mm f/1.8 but the difference in quality, build, and versatility with the wider aperture are night and day and worth the weight/size trade-off. In addition to portraits, I actually find the 85mm a great focal length for lifestyle and walking around photography, the quality of this lens really adds an extra punch to just about anything, even distant landscapes. The best part about this lens is you can shoot hand held in just about any condition thanks to the IS and wide aperture. For any serious portrait photographer you can probably buy this lens and not need to purchase anything else for the rest of your career. It's also a great addition to any other professional genre of photography.

I've had this amazing collection of Canon Glass in a barrel for a few months now and it has nearly been a permanent fixture on my 5D Mk-IV!!! While I have loved, as many have,my 85-1.2L for a long time and across several bodies, it's draggingly slow Autofocus has always been an issue for using it more than in the studio and select location work. While losing a stop of light seemed sad at first thougts, the addition of the amazing IS system in this lens has more than compensated...AND saved my forearms a lot of wear and tear on long days via the reduction in weight over the 1.2...
A truly awesome lens!

I have the 85mm 1.8 which I very much like. I have used the 85 1.2 which I loved but found difficult t use in "live" situations. When Canon announced the 1.4, I patiently waited and read everything that had been published about it: reviews, a couple of comparisons (Sigma Art, etc.). Well, I finally received my copy about 10 days ago and I really like it. The focusing is fast, the color accurate. Some reviewers believe the Sigma Art is sharper, has less CA, etc. The fact is that I find the differences negligible even at close inspection. The decisive addition of the IS makes this Canon the leader of the pack. This lens focuses quickly even with limited lighting. I am astounded by how quickly and sharply this lens responds. Great lens, great addition. It will displace my 135 1.2 and even the 70-200mm 2.8 in many situations.

Finally, an image-stabilized, weather-sealed 85mm! Fast and accurate focusing (much faster than the 1.2), sharp images, dreamy bokeh with that 3-D pop, and simply more versatility than the 1.2 makes this a winner. This does show a moderate amount of vignette at 1.4, but it's very gradual, and clears up by 2.8. Almost as fat, but longer than the 1.2, it is balanced better. This is the 85mm I've been dreaming of, and now it's mine!
