About this item

Highlights

  • RF lenses are intended for professional photographers, high-end amateurs, and low-light moviemaking and were built for compatibility with the new Canon EOS R mirrorless system and Canon RF Mount.
  • The RF 28-70mm f/2L lens is comprised of 19 lens elements in 13 groups. The strategic position of the lens’ four aspheric lens elements helps to minimize astigmatism, spherical aberration and geometric distortion.
  • The two UD (ultra-low dispersion) and one Super UD elements curtail longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberrations.
  • The large diameter mount and the short back focus are ideal tools in maintaining higher brightness of f/2.0 maximum aperture.
  • These two factors mean the front section of the lens can be physically much smaller than conventional EF lens architecture.

F2 sharpness worth the weight and control tradeoffs

Confirming what has already been said elsewhere. I'm using this lens paired with a R1 for mostly indoor sports photography (low-angle, under-the-net basketball shots). Lens is somewhat heavy, but not unexpected. Mass of lens doesn't throw off the center of balance significantly when paired with R1. Lens isn't overly heavy-- actively holding and zooming the lens for hours isn't a problem. For zooming, one would prefer the focus and zoom rings positions be swapped; however, the configuration is sufficient as is. Also, one would want to adjust the resistance on the zoom ring; however, the single built-in resistance is a decent balance between rapid and fine adjustments. The F2 is a world of difference between F2.8 and F4, particularly given the poor and high-contrast lighting conditions where I mostly use the lens.

    Incredible lens, but impractical.

I applaud Canon for making this wild lens - I've never seen a normal zoom with an f/2 and the output has a prime quality in terms of subject isolation. Excellent color and sharpness for a zoom, though not quite prime level. The weight and sheer mass of this lens, however, negates its utility as a normal zoom for walk-around. It's difficult and awkward to hand hold due to the width and the front element is positively monstrous. The weight is very unbalanced on an R5, which has far too small a grip and form factor. As with a telephoto, you are primarily holding the lens and the body is secondary. I still love that Canon makes these outrageous lenses that no one else will make. For those who don't really care about size/weight - this is a great option.

Fatal flaw: horrible ergonomics for handholding

Fatal flaw with this lens is the zoom ring is so narrow and set back so it's very hard to handhold and zoom. Ergonomically it's awful to handhold given the weight. Incredibly smooth bokeh and image quality. However, given the size and weight of this lens, I wish they would make more compromises in IQ to achieve a lighter, more versatile 2.0 zoom.

    Amazing lens

I did a lot of looking and researching before I purchase this lens and it has far exceeded my expectations when everyone tells you it’s large and heavy they’re not exaggerating, but it has taken my indoor volleyball pictures to a new level.

    Just Great.

Love the look of the images. Paired with an R5 I often get images that look more like film. Great focal range for people, cityscape, mountains landscapes. I do a lot of night photography as well and night cityscape and astro both work well with this. The clarity brings out stars you didn't realize were there.

THE BEST ZOOM LENS for RF cameras.

We have this lens at work and i LOVE it! can't wait to get one for myself and my own business. The picture quality is superb and grabs the faces clearly while leaving the background soft and muted. It's lovely - and surprisingly, much better than the 24-70 - the proportions of faces and bodies are always more complimentary. Only draw back is that it s Heavy - so be prepared, but worth carrying the extra weight; and sometimes we'd like the full 24 width of frame. C'mon canon - give us a 24-70 2.0! or better yet - 24-200 2.0!!! That would be the dream lens for sure.

The 28-70 exceeded all my expectations

This lens is incredible!! I cannot say enough good things about the 28-70. I use this lens paired with my Canon R6 for mostly wedding and portrait photography. The auto focus is wicked fast, the photos are always tack sharp, and the bokeh is very beautiful. I’ve always preferred prime lenses. I was unsure if this lens would be good enough to replace the need to carry around multiple prime lenses in my camera bag, but I’m happy to say it did!! This is my go to lens for all my professional client work! I will say I do not recommend this lens for travel because of the size. *The photos I attached are not straight out of camera they have been edited in post

It's Big and Heavy, but Will Be a Time Saver

I have used this lens for two different studio sessions and have shot roughly 500 images with it up to this point. The other reviews are pretty much spot on with this lens. It is heavy, and after about 4 hours, you will know it's there. However, when mounted to an R5 with a battery grip, the overall weight doesn't get in the way of doing things, it just tires you out a little bit. Optically, the lens behaves much like my previous EF 35mm f/1.4L and EF 50mm f/1.4L which I would use for location shoots. Using the RF 28-70mm gives me both of those focal lengths at nearly the same wide open aperture. Since I routinely shot at f/2 or tighter (for focus needs on a 5DS R), this lens will be great outdoors. The beauty is in the studio where I have limited room and need the zoom. I've been using an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II with great results, but now I can get much softer focus in the studio with a zoom lens. The weight might make me tired, but the benefit of being able to do a session without the need for changing lenses will make up for the extra fatigue. Maintaining the tempo and energy of the session will actually reduce the amount of time that you have to carry this lens. My only gripe about this lens is the 95mm filter threads. I have a kit based around what used to be the largest 82mm filters with a Lee 100 filter mount. This lens will be a bit problematic to use in the landscape setting because I have yet to find an adaptor that will work for the Lee 100 system that doesn't cause vignetting. Of course, my few round filters don't fit this lens at all. I do understand that to make this an f/2 lens, there was no way around this fact, so I'm not deducting any points for that feature, it is just a consideration which I knew going into the purchase.

    Awesome HEAVYWEIGHT

I wasn’t sure if I should keep this lens after suffering terrible back ache after the first long shoot day at a friend’s party in London, but the capability and the images are so fantastic that I thought I will get used using the lens. It’s my best tool so far. Excellent quality

    A Beast!

I'm not apposed to paying big money for gear if it's as good as promised and the Canon RF 28-70mm f 2.0 is more than I expected. Paired with my Canon R5 it's by far the best lens in my collection for portrait and landscape photography. I haven't used it for video yet but I expect the same phenomenal performance. The clarity and sharpness are unmatched. My Canon RF 24-70mm lens is an excellent lens but I have no need for it now.

a massive and very good zoom lens

The lens is sharp but also very heavy. I find the color from the lens is very saturated. maybe due to the RF lens design. When compared to my ef 85 1.2, I still like the 85/1.2 better in terms of image rendering (the 85/1.2 has special effects. It's hard to describe, and it feels like you can see the air or airiness). On the other side, this lens is sharper, but has some plastic feel to it. I know the zoom cannot compete with prime, I bought this lens for its versatility.
