Texture and application works for my hubby. Keeps his lips moisturized as he is very prone to dry lips. I haven't noticed a white cast nor had he mentioned it but I imagine that is a function of the SPF. Acceptable sub for the 18spf that is discontinued

Does this chapstick make my lips white? Yes, it does. Does it work way better at night than any other variety of lip balm I have ever used? Yes, it does! I don’t wear this one during the day (except when skiing) but I love this for nighttime lip balm (and so does my kid!).

Absolutely not! It leaves a very bad white sheen that makes me look like I have white foundation on and around my lips; oh and did I mention I’m a black woman🙃. Just google Tyrone Biggums and you’ll get the picture. If I could give this a 0 stars I would. Not worth $8 at all.

I bought these at a local big box store and saw on the store’s site many negative reviews (mostly critical of the white cast), so I’m here to leave a positive review. Chapstick is the go-to brand of lip balm in our household. There’s a Chapstick in every room of our house — coffee table drawer, nightstand drawer, desk drawer, bathroom counter, all my purses, car glove compartments (and they don’t melt even in a hot car!) — we love the creamy moisture and the compact size. My husband’s favorite is the black classic variety and mine are the strawberry and cherry for the faint pinkish-red tint. We used to use the spf 15 in the dark blue tubes, but after reading up on chemical sunscreens I made the family switch to mineral sunscreens. However, it was hard to find a good mineral spf lip balm — all the other ones we tried were hard and chunky. This Chapstick Active 2-in-1 is creamy just like all our other Chapsticks. Does it have a white cast — yes, but as a person of color, it isn’t the worst white cast I’ve experienced, and I layer colored lip products over it to minimize the white cast. My husband is not a POC and won’t wear a colored product over it, but he isn’t too bothered by the white cast. Our opinion is that the slight white cast is a fair tradeoff for the creamy, mineral, non-chemical sun protection (and it’s a higher spf than the the dark blue Chapsticks). Please don’t discontinue this one! (Or keep the same formula but improve upon the white cast ☺️)

I was so excited to have a lip balm with a higher SPF than the normal Chapsticks I use from this brand. My skin is very sensitive, so I always struggle with dry lips. Unfortunately, I won't be using this product again. It leaves a glaringly obvious white cast on your lips after just 1 swipe. It made my lips look purple! If you're very pale, you might not be able to tell, but I have very red/pink undertones and it's obvious as soon as I put it on. I do not recommend this for anyone that's darker complected.

I purchased the active 2 in 1 product after not being able to find the Sun Defense that I have used for years. It is awful. It makes your lips and surrounding areas white. It is completely useless. I do not know why they discontinued the Sun Defense but the Active 2 in 1 is truly a poorly conceived product.

CURED my child's "lip lickers rash" when nothing else worked!

This chapstick is the ONLY thing that has helped my son’s horrible rash around his mouth this winter. We tried everything - Different kinds of Vaseline, expensive balms and oils, humidifiers, colloidal oatmeal baths, EVERYTHING. Nothing really made much of a difference… until THIS! We used this all around his mouth every night before bed, and just a little in the morning before school. By the 3rd day, his terrible crusty red rash was gone! Like other reviews have stated, it does apply very white. Even on my son’s extremely pale skin, it looked a bit clownish when we put it all around his mouth before bed 🤡 We just had to apply sparingly in the morning before school. So, if you’re looking for an every day chapstick to keep your lips plump and beautiful, this is NOT it (try ILIA’s lip balms or one of the other chapsticks). But it worked miracles on my son’s extremely sensitive and irritated winter skin, when all else failed. Chapstick - pleeeeeease don’t stop making this!!!!

I bought this because I am out in the sun alot. I would never expect Chapstick to actually put this on the market. It turns your lips white and the taste is terrible. It looks like I ate a box of powdered donuts and then put on white chalk for lipstick and it tastes terrible

I kissed a clown and I [didn't] like it...

I recently realized that one or more of the organic/chemical sunscreens in lip balm makes my lips peel, so I’ve resorted to using mineral face sticks on my lips and then topping that with a tinted lip balm or lipstick to obscure the white cast, but it’s a pain to do that constantly, so I was THRILLED when I found this stuff while on vacation. The blue SPF15 Chapstick was always my go-to before realizing my constant lip peeling was due to the SPF, so I thought I’d scored by finding a Chapstick with a mineral sunscreen and no other possibly irritating ingredients (in the plain/unscented one at least), but like everyone else has said, the white cast is over the top. Vanicream used to make one that had a pretty bad cast, but could at least be blended to be uniform. But this stuff is not only chalk white, the whiteness shifts all over so it looks like a Got Milk commercial gone terribly wrong. I realize that probably also means that it’s not forming a good, even film to protect against the sun. Oh well, I’m still giving it 3 stars because it feels good (has a good texture), it seemingly works (as long as it’s slathered on), and I don’t notice any weird flavors. But I can only use it by itself in situations where I absolutely do not care what I look like, because as others have said, it looks like I kissed a clown on the forehead, or face planted into a frosted cupcake, or tried to eat some of that old-school zinc that lifeguards used to put on their noses. Btw, I understand that it’s basically impossible to create a non-white-cast mineral sunscreen without adding an organic/chemical “booster” like, which kind of defeats the purpose of being “100% mineral”—but maybe they could create a tinted version to obscure the whiteness a little? Or maybe they *should* add an ingredient like butyloctyl salicylate, since it’s quite mild on sensitive skin, and I’ll buy it and see if that’s one of the ingredients that makes my lips peel, hah. I see now why mineral lip balms are so hard to come by—they’re clearly hard to do well.

this lip balm is one of two products i have found that have an adequate amount of zinc oxide to provide actual sun protection. the other product from a different brand contains ingredients to which i am allergic i put it on a few minutes before i apply my lipstick and it helps keep my lips moisturized throughout the day (i exclusively wear matte lipstick, which tends to be drying, so i do what i can before and after wearing it) it does leave a white cast but i don't really care since i cover it up anyway; perhaps offering tinted versions of this product would make it more universal than it already is.
