Book Synopsis

Manila, 2003. A chance meeting with an aging Korean War veteran becomes the gateway to a remarkable story of war and love spanning time and generations.

When writer Dane Chandler meets the formidable Jack Pierce in a worn Manila pension, he senses the older man has a story worth hearing. What begins as an unlikely friendship unfolds into something unforgettable: Jack's deeply personal account of postwar Japan, first love, battlefield terror, and the ghosts he has since carried with him.

In 1949, young American soldier Jack Pierce arrives in occupied Japan expecting adventure with his manly, tough-talking army buddies. Instead, in Tokyo's vibrant dance halls and shadowed streets, he meets Michiko Okura-a beautiful Japanese woman whose grace, strength, and sorrow change him forever. Their bond deepens against the vivid backdrop of postwar Japan, but history has other plans. When war erupts in Korea, Jack is thrown into brutal combat, where friendship, loyalty, and survival are tested on the blood-soaked slopes of Rat Mountain.

As Dane listens to Jack's story, he finds himself changed-drawn into a tale of love, courage, regret, and the enduring marks people leave on one another.

Sweeping, heartfelt, gritty, and humorous, the richly detailed Cherry Blossoms in Winter is a powerfully realistic historical novel about young men at war, forbidden love, camaraderie, and redemption across generations.
