Description

About the Book

Explores the origins, developments, and expansion of Christianity in Lagos, as well as the lived experience of Christians in the city.

Book Synopsis

Despite political persecution, economic stalemate and military intimidation, this book shows how churches of all denominations continue to grow under the stimulus of vibrant indigenous spirituality and cultural idioms.

Incorporating interviews with Christians from six of the most influential churches in Lagos, this book gives readers a sense of daily life in Lagos for Christians. Through this original ethnographic research, Caleb O. Oladipo explores first-hand accounts of faith and practice in the city, offering a unique perspective to scholars of global Christianity.

A collection of stories from Christians of diverse ethnographic backgrounds, this book shows that Christianity is an integral part of the rhythm of life in Lagos. Christians in Lagos, one of the most populous cities in the world, are dynamic with a confluence of traditions, beliefs, and community.

Review Quotes

An extraordinary opportunity to "observe" and "listen" to people whose experience of Christianity as African is profoundly eye opening.
Jonathan Bonk, Boston University, USA

Out of a vibrant collection of personal faith stories, Caleb O. Oladipo renders a striking portrait of lived religion in the heart of West Africa. Lagosian Christianity, shaped in part by traditional African religious ideas and practices, reflects well the complex reality of World Christianity. In these pages, the Christian faith is shown to be a dynamic shaper of individual lives and family histories
Stanley H. Skreslet, Union Presbyterian Seminary, USA
