Review Quotes
Charlie Sullivan's Coaching Youth Sport, Guidelines to Ensure Development of Young Athletes is THE book youth sport coaches need to transform their practice and improve children's experiences. An incredibly accomplished teacher-coach himself, Charlie brings his knowledge of pedagogy, biomechanics, sport psychology, and motor learning to life in ways that readers can quickly apply. Who better to learn from than Charlie who earned promotion to full professor - only the third teacher-coach to do so, and the youngest at that - at Springfield College, home to the teacher-coach model and the "cradle of coaches".
Coach Sullivan is an exceptional coach who understands sport can be a holistic catalyst for human development and building a championship culture. I have been a physical education professor for over 25 years and consulted and lectured nationally with youth development organizations such as First Tee and others, recreation departments, school systems and youth sport organizations. I have seen the positive impact in these instances when coaches are intentional in their approach. I highly recommend Charlie's book for those looking to continue to improve their coaching craft to inspire, influence and impact athletes of all ages and skill levels.
Coaching Youth Sport, Guidelines to Ensure Development of Young Athletes is very consistent with the principles and tools that Positive Coaching has been sharing since its founding in 1998. Coach Sullivan provides excellent guidance and strategies to be a coach who develops not only Better Athletes, but also Better People. This book provides a thorough framework to build your coaching around, but can also be used to supplement a well-established Positive Coaching approach with additional knowledge and tools!
I had the privilege of coaching with Charlie at the youth sports level. After learning his coaching structure, I began to implement it in multiple sports and age levels. The experience for both the players and coaches was extremely positive and gave the kids opportunities to view success in different ways.
The growth of youth sports, the influence of coaches in the shaping and involvement in the maturation of young people is significant in our challenging and rapidly evolving world today. Having someone as grounded, as sensitive and successful as Charlie to provide guidance and suggestions, tools that will allow for positive experiences, demonstrated research and life based examples can't be overstated in importance. Coaching Youth Sport, Guidelines to Ensure Development of Young Athletes is an easy read that will pay enormous dividends, and I hope it finds its way onto the shelves or lap top of every coach who wants to connect and create the most positive experience for the youngsters in their charge. I highly recommend this book and so appreciate Charlie for summarizing his thoughts, knowledge and experiences----he has benefited us all.
The values which can accrue from youth sport participation are many including: increased fitness, mental acuity, positive attitudes, social development, and self-esteem. Unfortunately there can also be negative consequences from participation. The development of these qualities in youth sport, whether positive or negative, are dependent upon the environment provided by the leaders of youth sport.
This book provides a guide, based upon the most current research, regarding youth sport ... including both the "uses and abuses", as well as tips for parents' coaches, fans, and leaders in youth sport as to how we can ensure that children can reap only positive benefits from youth sport participation.
