The west African  dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis) is one of three species of African crocodiles. It is the smallest crocodile in the world, growing to no more than 5 feet in length. It is black in color with patches of yellow on its underside, and has a short blunt snout similar to a caiman's. It is a slow, reclusive animal and hunts at night in water or on the bank. During the day it rests in burrows that may have a submerged entrance. Little is known about the population of this unusual reptile. It has been presumed by conservationists that its number is still plentiful.
