The southern copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix) is a venomous pit viper found in North America. While the largest southern copperhead recorded was over 50 inches long, most adults reach a length of less than 36 inches. Southern copperheads are also known simply as copperheads, or as death adders, highland moccasins, pilot snakes, American copperheads, and cantil cobrizo. Copperheads are primarily ambush predators, setting themselves in a given place and waiting for suitable prey, usually a mouse or vole, to wander by. Copperheads also will actively pursue insects as prey. Like most snakes, copperheads will avoid contact with humans and prefer to move away if given the chance. UNLIKE other pit vipers, however, the copperhead will freeze in place if an approaching creature gets too close too fast, relying on its camouflage to protect it from a predator rather than its speed.
