This series of short volumes, each devoted to a theme which is the subject of contemporary debate in archaeology, ranges from issues in theory and method to aspects of world archaeology. The archaeology of recent conflict is a fast-moving field of research. It is challenging and provocative. It deals with established historical events for which the material remains are unquestionably 'heritage', but also the more recent, tragic and heavily politicised events, actions and places whose meaning and significance is more ambiguous. About the Author

John Schofield works for English Heritage where he is Head of Military Programmes and an Inspector in the newly formed Characterisation Team. He is also visiting lecturer in archaeology at the University of Southampton. He has published widely on the subject of contemporary and modern heritage, and on the archaeology of conflict. His current projects include work at the Cold War peace camps at Greenham Common and Nevada, in Berlin, and among the abandoned bars and clubs of Valletta (Malta).
