Paul Tillichs (1886-1965) Abhandlung Der Mut zum Sein ist eine seiner einflussreichsten Schriften, welche ihn einem breiten Lesepublikum bekannt machte. Das schmale Bändchen geht auf seine 'Dwight Harrington Terry Foundation Lectures on Religion in the Light of Science and Philosophy' zurück, welche er vom 30. Oktober bis 2. November 1950 an der Yale University gehalten hatte. In Der Mut zum Sein fasst Tillich zentrale Gedanken seines theologischen Gesamtwerkes brennpunktartig in seiner Reformulierung des Glaubensbegriffs als Mut zum Sein vor dem Hintergrund einer Deutung der modernen Gesellschaft zusammen. Werkgeschichtlich gehört die Schrift in die Spätphase seines Denkens, wie es in der Systematischen Theologie vorliegt, deren erster Band im Jahre 1951 erschien.
Der klar geschriebene und mit einer Einleitung in das Denken Tillichs versehene Band führt prägnant in grundlegende Motive seiner Theologie und Religionsphilosophie ein.
