The surface of the tama (ball) is perfectly coated with a high quality, glossy paint designed to withstand extended play without chipping. Kendama is played by skillfully catching a wooden ball (tama), attached by a string, onto different parts of the handle (ken)—including three cups and a spike. Players swing or flick the ball into the air and try to land it on one of the cups or spike, combining balance, timing, and precision. As skills improve, players can link tricks together for creative combos and freestyle play.
