Description
About the Book
"This long-anticipated reference and sourcebook for California's remarkable ecological abundance provides an integrated assessment of each major ecosystem type--its distribution, structure, function, and management. A comprehensive synthesis of our knowledge about this biologically diverse state, this book covers the state's oceans to mountaintops using multiple lenses: past and present, flora and fauna, aquatic and terrestrial, natural and managed. Each chapter evaluates natural processes for a specific ecosystem, describes drivers of change, and discusses how that ecosystem may be altered in the future. This book also explores the drivers of California's ecological patterns and the history of the state's various ecosystems, outlining how the challenges of climate change and invasive species and opportunities for regulation and stewardship could potentially affect the state's ecosystems. The text explicitly incorporates both human impacts and conservation and restoration efforts and shows how ecosystems support human well-being. Edited by two esteemed ecosystem ecologists and with overviews by leading experts on each ecosystem, this definitive work will be indispensable for natural resource management and conservation professionals as well as for undergraduate or graduate students of California's environment and curious naturalists"--Provided by publisher.Book Synopsis

"Ecosystems of California is likely to become the first reference for many people working in, studying, or just enjoying California ecosystems. The authors and contributors are excellent, and all are authorities in their fields."--Peter B. Moyle, coeditor of Suisun Marsh, coauthor of Protecting Life on Earth, and author of Inland Fishes of California "Even in a time when books and bookshelves are declining, I envision that every California ecologist--and many ecologists globally, especially with interest in Mediterranean ecosystems--will have this book on their shelf."--Michael Allen, Director, Center for Conservation Biology, UC Riverside, and author of The Ecology of Mycorrhizae "Ecosystems of California synthesizes the state of knowledge of California ecosystems and distills future trends. Each chapter is comprehensive, detailed, and well referenced, and it truly covers California ecosystems from the oceans to the mountaintops. It spans everything I could think of offering in a class."--Jessica Blois, UC Merced, contributing author to Biodiversity in a Changing ClimateReview Quotes
"Ecosystems of California provides students, resource managers, and policy practitioners a much-needed reference for learning and guidance and will be especially useful for regional library collections."-- "CHOICE"
