About the Book
"Could Earth be flat? Are the birds you see actually robots designed to spy on people? Did giant sharks called megalodons really die out millions of years ago, or are they still alive? Some people believe in conspiracy theories about the planet we call home. Take a deep dive into some of these conspiracy theories to discover how they started, why people believe them, and what scientists have to say. Will these conspiracy theories be debunked, or will questions linger?"--Book Synopsis
Could Earth be flat? Are the birds you see actually robots designed to spy on people? Did giant sharks called megalodons really die out millions of years ago, or are they still alive? Will these conspiracy theories be debunked, or will questions linger?Review Quotes
People are intrigued by conspiracy theories--even if they don't believe them. This well-done series, written in a conversational tone, will quickly grab and hold readers' attention and help students learn to think about and question what they read and hear. Each title covers four conspiracy theories, a term that is defined early on. Chapters discuss how such theories start and are maintained, what researchers say, and how they're debunked. Some examples are ludicrous and might make students chuckle while reading. However, the series admits some (more plausible sounding) theories are difficult to disprove and give pause, which allows scientists to ask questions and find out more. An important feature in each book poses questions that provide valuable ideas for student consideration. The series is visually attractive, with black-and-white and color photos and helpful captions. Some artwork is cartoonish, e.g., aliens and reptiles, and maps are included when needed. VERDICT Recommended for schools and public libraries. Absorbing, solidly evidence-based, and thought-provoking.--Carol Goldman, formerly at Queens Public Library, NY "School Library Journal"
The Investigating Conspiracy Theories series (4 titles) seeks to prevent the spread of false information and fake news. Concentrating on conspiracy theories related to the planet, this STEM-focused installment opens with an explanation of conspiracy theories and why some people believe them, followed by a list of guided questions to ask about a theory's validity. Next, individual chapters, with straightforward text, stock photos, and artistic renderings, are dedicated to specific conspiracy theories: the earth is flat, the earth is also hollow with civilizations living inside, megalodons still exist, and some birds are actually drones created by the government to spy on citizens. In each case, the author describes the conspiracy theory and presents scientific evidence that debunks it. The result gives young readers tools to form their own opinions based on facts.--Angela Leeper "Booklist"
