Brought to the Hawaiian Islands by Chinese immigrants, Li Hing Mui is a salty, dried plum snack that has become a beloved favorite for generations of Hawaii locals. The name “li hing mui” translates to “traveling plum.” Generally, the flavor of li hing mui can be described as a combination of sweet, sour, and salty. However, sweet li hing mui is sweeter and less salty than regular (also known as “red”) li hing mui. Family Sweet Li Hing Mui uses whole dried plums and thus still contains the seed in its middle (which should not be eaten). Li hing mui can be enjoyed on its own and is often placed on shave ice, used as an ingredient in homemade pickled fruit recipes, or added to alcoholic beverages. It is a unique and flavorful snack that is loved by many.
