Q: The NYT says the best home made filter for a face mask is an allergen hvac air filter, 1900 microparticles. How do I use this for a face mask? Will I breathe something harmful by handling the filter?

Our filters are designed to be used in HVAC systems, and the filter media has not been tested to be used as a face mask for respiratory protection. Q: What is the pressure drop across this filter compared with other 3M filters for an average furnace. We got a new furnace and installer cautioned against using filters that are too restrictive

Q: Is this a HEPA filter?

A: Great question! Filtrete(TM) Filters are not classified as High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters. A HEPA filter has a capture rate of approximately 99.8%. For a filter to be a true HEPA filter, it would be very restrictive to the airflow. We are not aware of a furnace or air-conditioning filter that is classified as HEPA. Been using the 1900 series for I don't know. It seems like 30 plus years. I love the filter with the way it works. Was the newer systems coming in air handler size changes so it means your filter size changes? I'm only hope one day you guys will have an adjustable frame and have the same quality of filtering is the 1900 plus who seriously needs some changes as these newer units come in and the adjustable frames will definitely help. As far as I know, nobody makes a 23 and just shy of 23 and three quarters made it the same 23 and three quarters or just the spec shorter smaller. Again rub the products been with you. I use 3m filtrete because I have used them for 30 years, without problems. I use this one (1900) because my HVAC equipment can only handle MERV 11 as a maximum, and because this one also comes in sensor model (Filtrete™ MPR 1900 SMART Premium Allergen) that you use a connected app to monitor actual flow data during use. When it gets too restrictive it lets you know so you can get the best service life w/o guessing! After that, just replace and reset your app. I compare the used with the new side by side in daylight to see what has collected as a reference.
PRICE IS VERY HIGH.

Have used Filtrete MPR 1900 16x20x1 for 5 years and have never had an issue with fit or performance. During non-HVAC times of the year, I will run the air handler only for 30 minutes and it cleans the home air. And although the recommended filter replacement is every 3 months, I get 6 months of use so it's not high cost for what you get. It's also in a home location quick & easy for me to remove, inspect, and replace it.
How About a 18x20x1 filter rated 1900?

I need a 18x20x1 1900 filter but Filtrete doesn't make one, settled for a 1500 but not satisfied. Found an Aerostar filter and an evaluating it, but would prefer Filterate for good quality control and honest rating assessment.

If you have pets, give this a try and check back in 2 weeks or a month. Especially during the hot summer months when your HVAC is really working hard. The amount of dust and dirt and hair this traps is astounding.

Check your actual HVAC size dimensions before buying. I live an in apartment and old brand they used fits perfectly at 15.5, 19.5, 3/4 inches. However, this brand had to be jammed into my HVAC system so I ended up returning it.

Upon advice from my doctor to purchase a better a/c filter, I researched and purchased two of these. We quickly noticed a difference in the air quality, my headaches and sneezing are much better now. I am allergic to dust mites and my cats dander - I am extremely impressed. When I clean, there is far less dust accumulated on surfaces in my house which is lovely. After changing the filter recently we found out why - this filter is blocking everything. So great! We are considering investing in higher grades of the Filtrete brand because this one has done so well.
