Joyful and Fun Addition to FF7 Story

Quiet - 1 month ago
Rebirth continues where Remake left off. And like Remake, it diverges from the original story in some ways while still adhering to the overall story and plot points. Rebirth feels like a celebration of the original game while still being its own entity. It does not replace the original, nor is it trying to. It is an addition. While you could skip Remake and start from Rebirth, this is not recommended. It’s also ideal to have played the original PS1 game and be familiar with the spin-off content, including but not limited to Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, the novels, and Advent Children. People completely new to FF7 may feel lost at times. Like the original PS1 game, Rebirth is loaded with mini games, including a new and addicting card game. Some of the open world stuff is repetitive but is structured mostly to get you running around the map and explore. It is not mandatory. This game is a joyful experience from start to finish and there is evident and abundant love for this story and world, these characters, in everything it does. It’s a sharp contrast to the dour and gloomy experience of FF16, which I had played just a few months prior to Rebirth’s release. The colors are bright and vibrant, the music is wonderful, and it remembers that even though this is a serious story, it is okay to be silly (as the original frequently was!). Combat still feels sharp with a few new mechanics. Each party member plays differently and you will be forced into learning each of them. You can choose your party for the open world content but bosses and story segments will frequently restrict you to specific characters. Equipment loadouts are critical to getting through bosses and challenges. It is also worth mentioning that Rebirth is noticeably more difficult than Remake. Especially Hard Mode. While you can “overlevel” to an extent, I got to the final boss at level 50 after completing all normal mode side content and it was still a reasonable challenge that took several attempts to roll credits. You’d be looking at maybe a couple of hours of additional grinding in the second to last chapter to hit 70(max) at that point, but it kills the story momentum and isn’t necessary. There is an easy mode and the game allows you to freely switch to it from normal. New to Rebirth is a dynamic difficulty that will scale things up to your level if you start to feel that you are overleveled in normal. Hard Mode expects you to be max level with highly leveled materia from the start and to know the mechanics and bosses on a deeper level. In Remake’s Hard Mode, this was important but it was more flexible in allowing mistakes or suboptimal equipment. Oftentimes Rebirth’s Hard Mode content is unforgiving. Chapter Select is available postgame and you can either keep or reset side quest progress, so don’t feel anxious about skipping quests on the first play through. I am two legendary combat sim challenges away from the platinum trophy at nearly 200 hours of gameplay. It has been a sincere joy to play, aside from some frustration with the optional Hard Mode content. Eagerly looking forward to the final game in this project!

It’s not worth the 70$. I found myself skipping most of the scenes due to Yuffie driving me nuts. The game becomes very monotonous about a quarter of the way through the game. Barely any quests, no dungeons, no fishing. Not much of an open world to explore, as much as it is running around doing the same things every time you get to a different part of the world. It’s worth a play when it’s free, so you don’t feel so bad wasting your money

Cringy Filler Episode of An Anime

You just can not trust modern-day Square Enix. I knew that going in, but as a fan of the original, I wanted to believe they would do better for this. What you get is unbelievably cringy dialogue (lookup crybaby Ned), plastic looking people who like FF15 npc's look out of place, acting and dialog straight out of an anime for kids and combat that has the enemies way too spongey. Somebody tell modern Japanese game devs that sharp things like swords cut and aren't weak blunt objects. This game is unbearable, filled with filler content and unnecessary quick time events or things like taking way too long to turn valves or just miserable and poorly made stealth parts.

This game is amazing. If you have not played Remake, DO NOT LISTEN TO YOUTUBERS OR IGN when they say you don’t need to play Remake. A lot of spoilers in Rebirth obviously and you will get lost.
