Description
The First Alert BRK PRC700V Talking Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features a photoelectric smoke sensor and an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor. The photoelectric sensor detects larger smoke particles from smoldering fires from objects like cigarettes burning on furniture or in trash cans. A patented smoke entry system further enhances the detector's reliability by providing a direct path to the smoke sensor. This voice alarm not only alerts you whether the threat is smoke or carbon monoxide, but also uses 11 pre-programmed locations to tell you the location of the danger in your home. The battery-operated smoke and CO detector can be installed easily, with no wires or electrician required, and its slim profile will seamlessly blend in with your home decor. The alarm operates on two AA batteries. Battery operation means that even in the event of a power outage, the alarm can still function.

I really liked that it was combo smoke & carbon and that it used AA batteries. However, this is less than 1 year old and within the last 2 months it's gone off for no reason. I changed the batteries after the first false alarm and here I am again.

This unit replaces an older First Alert that reported itself as being "defective," and this one was the lowest cost one I could find on the 'net. When I rec'd it, although the packaging was as shown in the Target description, the one I got is a different model: PRC700V vs PC1200V, respectively. Apparently, the former is discontinued; my guess is that the seller (Target?) posted the correct information, except for the model number. According to First Alert, the units are fairly identical, with only minor differences. Anyway, the old unit's mounting holes (ceiling) were the same as the new one, so, I didn't have to do any drilling. The base and unit are wider than the old one, but, it still fit, although the base is just a tad loose from the ceiling, and I can't make it any tighter without possibly cracking the plastic base. The unit is nearly half as deep/thick as the old one, which doesn't matter to me, but, it could for people who mount it low on a wall, where people may walk by. I set the voice location to the given room and tested it via the "test" button: It is incredibly loud! I hope it never goes off, except to warn me of a low battery (I change them (in this case, 2 AAs) twice a year) or aged unit, as the previous one did. I am very pleased.

We have had this unit for less than 6 months and it has now gone off twice in the middle of the night for no reason. We have put in new batteries just to be sure, and it still went off again saying there was smoke detected when there wasn't any. The only reason I'm giving this two stars instead of one is because the alert system is very loud- which, in the case of an actual emergency, would be a really important feature. But this has now scared my kids twice while they were sleeping for no reason so we will be getting rid of it.

Basic detector that works

This is a very basic carbon monoxide and smoke alarm. It gets the job done but looks weird and feels cheap.
So far, no complaints

It's difficult to review something that I hope I never have to use or hear. So far, however, it hasn't turned on for "minor kitchen events" like our other smoke detector did, so I guess that's the "patented smoke entry system" working. I like that it's a combo unit that is reasonably priced. I like that I was able to put it where my broken smoke detector was with little effort. I was concerned that it wouldn't fit because the old "plate" was smaller, but this one gives you a few options for mounting--not just two holes.

Nice to have two detectors in one! Our Carbon Monoxide detector stopped working and I was able to replace it same day with in-store pick-up. Just wish you had more in stock.

I purchased two of the First Alert PRC700V units for a friend and helped install them. They were easy to install and test to familarize us with features. I would recommend this product to anyone that was interested in purchasing a combined smoke and carbon monoxide detector.

This model detector comes with a battery that can not be replaced but is suppose to last 10 years. It failed after 2 years of use. Not good.

I couldn’t figure out from the instructions how to set the talking part of the alarm, and it doesn’t seem useful to me anyway. It’s a functional alarm, though. Not hardwired, but that’s what the description said when I bought it.

Absolutely horrible. The instructions are so small I would need a magnifying glass and they are not clear either. Last time I buy something like that.

This alarm works, is really loud, tells you whether smoke or CO; fits the code for fire inspection certificate and it's less money than buying smoke and CO detectors separately AND it comes with batteries. Glad I bought it
Enclosed Instruction Print Too Small to Read
4 out of 5 stars
M0llyAnn - 8 years ago, Verified purchaser
About 4 or 5 of us tried reading the instructions that were enclosed, but could not do so because the printing was way too small. I felt possibly I could find the instructions on the internet that would be in larger print, but it was exactly the same as the instructions that were enclosed with the First Alert Combination Alarm. I ended up scanning the instructions and then enlarging them which was quite a hassle. Nothing more to write yet at this point.
