Review Quotes

Words have been chosen carefully and the smiling images of all present at the birth, including the various animals, make this a sweet choice for young patrons. Digital images help make the book more appealing, with subdued colors and soft lines.--School Library Journal

When searching for a way to tell the Christmas story that is appropriate for a small child, look no further than this brightly illustrated board book. In ten pages, with one sentence on each page, the complete account is told in language geared toward a little one. Children’s eyes will be drawn to illustrations that are bright, colorful, and highlight an important element in each line. This is a great book for youngsters through seven-years-old. They will easily grasp the meaning of the first Christmas! In this case, simplest is the best way relate a story for the littles, and I highly recommend this sweet five-star book. Thank you, Worthy Kids, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own.

LEARNING ABOUT THE NATIVITY

“Introduce your little one to the story of Christmas with this adorable book of first words,” states the back jacket of the children’s book, First Words of Christmas. ~ What ~ This twenty-page board book with rounded corners targets children ages one to three years old. With no scary scenes, it is the story of the Nativity. Colorful illustrations cover both sides of the pages with the left sides being more detailed and the right sides having one word with one design. Beginning with an angel telling Mary she was going to have a baby, the short story includes Mary and Joseph going to Bethlehem, them staying in a stable, Jesus, our promised Savior being born in a manger, the angels visiting the shepherds, and the wise men following the star and giving presents to the Christ-child. The “first words” promoted are Mary, Bethlehem, Stable, Manger, Jesus, Shepherd, Angel, Wise Men, Star, and Gifts. ~Why ~ This is a lovely reminder about the true meaning of Christmas being about Jesus’s birth. I appreciate it is Biblical instead of secular regarding the holiday so that young ones can learn about our Saviour. There is enough activity in the pictures to keep a child interested while listening to the story and learning the key words. ~ Why Not ~ Some may not like a book that explains the real meaning of Christmas. It does not discuss the eternal plan of salvation, but that may be due to the targeted age group. There are many complicated words that young ones may not understand or comprehend, but they could be explained by the reader. The book may be too hard for beginner readers. ~ Wish ~ I wish all pronouns of Jesus were capitalized for reverence. ~ Want ~ If you are looking for a Christmas book for toddlers that promotes Jesus’s birthday, this would be a nice present that will be loved. Thanks to Hachette Book Group, WorthyKids, and the author for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.
