Engaging and Meaningful Book for All Ages

This book does a great job of sharing the scriptural context of the Jesus’ last supper, what communion means to different groups of Christians today, and how different Christian traditions practice it- all with attention to making sure it is accessible for children. The illustrations are beautiful and diverse, the narrative story is very engaging, and the poetic stanzas offer a wonderful liturgy to bring the entire book together. My son is three, but very observant at church and already knows that communion is a special time, and this book has been very helpful to help teach him more of the meaning behind our church’s weekly ritual around the table. This book would be great for older children as well, and even adults.

Glenys Nellist has written a wonderful book about the mystery, symbols, and elements of communion in a way that is understandable and engaging for children. Her book invites readers to celebrate the uniqueness of our diverse communities gathering together in unity through communion. I like the thoughtfulness and intention that went into portraying the church communities with families from diverse backgrounds and highlighting different styles of worship that can lead to deeper discussions about the global church. I like how the illustrations depict diverse, multi-generational families joyfully worshipping together and taking communion that symbolizes their unity in Christ. The book alternates between poetry and a brief explanation of each aspect of communion. This format allows the option of focusing on rereading aloud the beautiful rhyming verses to younger children so they can hear the overall flow of the poem. More importantly, this book helps busy families pause and make communion a special and meaningful time of remembrance. A great gift to give to children for baptism and first communion! I received an advanced reader e-copy of this book.

Gathered at the Table is a sweet children’s story with beautiful illustrations that clearly explain the practice of communion and what it represents. This delightful story lovingly includes various cultures who participate in gathering at the table of communion and it espouses a myriad of methods used to gather. The love Jesus has for all people and His desire that all gather together at the table in unity remembering His love and acts of love resonates throughout the pages of this wonderful book.

What a beautiful book to celebrate the gift of Jesus, the Lord's Supper, and God's family of believers! I was immediately drawn in by the joyful images on the cover and the warm, inviting color palette. The lovely way communion is described, honored, and celebrated not only helps kids understand why we practice it, but also reminds them what a special gift it is. One of my favorite things about the book is that so many traditions are portrayed. This can serve as both a mirror (allowing kids to see their own tradition) and a window (helping them understand other ways to take communion). I also love the way memorable rhymes alternate with more detailed prose to give families a delightful experience when they share it together. This lovely book provides lots of opportunities for family or church conversations and would make a great gift as well. Lovely!
