Great Family Resource

As parents, we want to shelter and protect our children from ever having to face sadness in their life, but unfortunately we can't always do that. In this broken world, our children are going to go through things that cause sadness, pain, and hurt. This book helps children understand that sadness is a natural feeling that we are allowed to feel, how to walk through sadness, and ways to cope. I would recommend getting this book now, and not waiting until your child is dealing with sadness so they can have an understanding of this emotion beforehand. Even as an adult, the wisdom this book contains is right on for dealing with my own struggles at times with sadness and depression. --April

A Positive Message All Children Need to Hear

This book is written with sensitivity and addresses a variety of circumstances that make adults and children sad, such as bullying, an injury, or sickness. The illustrations are beautiful and include children from a variety of ethnicities. It gives children ideas for how to handle sadness, and best of all it teaches children about God's unconditional love and concern. I highly recommend this book.

Hope in the Midst of Sadness

This little book thoroughly explores sadness and how to process it. While completely kid-friendly, it will help more than a few adult readers too. Not only do authors Fortner and Nietert give practical tips on working through sadness and its ebbs and flows, they also gently remind readers of God's presence with them and His gifts of hope--which come in a variety as extensive as God's creativity. This is a must-have for your library.

Help Your Little One Understand Big Feelings

As a preschool director and long-time educator, I appreciate the tender approach Michelle Nietert and Tama Fortner take while introducing a challenging feeling to young children. Not only do the authors provide a variety of synonyms little ones can use to label sadness, but they also share several descriptors that explain how their bodies may respond to the emotion. This book is a must for families with young children, faith-based preschools, and therapists helping children manage "big feelings".
