Book Synopsis

This brilliant collection features an array of landmark gothic writers, including Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley, Sheridan Le Fanu, Sir Walter Scott and many more.

Gothic fiction emerged in the 18th century, recognised for its bleak and sinister landscapes which housed unnatural forces of evil. Often controversial in their time, these stories pushed the boundaries of what was possible in fiction and evoked unsettling emotions as they told their tales of mysterious places, lost secrets, and sudden, shocking violence.

This bone-chilling collection brings together the very best within the genre, featuring crumbling castles, chilling cathedrals, and haunted manors as their eerie settings. Packed with supernatural settings and unknown entities, the stories within include surprised around every corner that will linger long after the final page has been turned.

Includes:
- The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe
- The Whistling Room by William Hope Hodgson
- Bewitched by Edith Wharton
- The Dream by Mary Shelley
- The Iron Shroud by Ambrose Bierce

About the Author

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was the outstanding English novelist of the Victorian era as well as a vigorous social campaigner. His most famous works include Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, Bleak House, Hard Times, Dombey and Son and The Pickwick Papers.

Mary Shelley
was only eighteen when Lord Byron challenged a group of friends to write the best horror story. She fleshed out her original and this was accepted for publication when she was just twenty. Shelley wrote several novels after Frankenstein but none of them has stood the test of time, although in her lifetime she was taken seriously as a writer, especially of biographies. She died in 1851, thirty years after the tragic early death of her husband Percy.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was a Scottish writer. His most famous works include 'Treasure Island' (1883) and 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' (1886).
