Such a beautiful story of coming home and second chances. I honestly wasn’t sure I was going to like this book at first; it’s very somber. There’s very little in the way of light and laughter. And yet after a few chapters I was totally pulled in. Author Patricia Johns deals with several issues, including infidelity, alcoholism, and child abuse. Done carefully I don’t think any of them would be a trigger but they show man’s frailty. His need for God and community. Not the typical Amish story, but a story of three sisters each walking their separate paths, yet together. Tabitha is living as a divorced woman in the Amish community and happens to be their veterinarian. Both such uncommon things. Rose is trying to discover why her marriage isn’t working, and Amanda wants to find love. All of the characters in this book are portrayed honestly, with flaws, strengths, and weaknesses. Add in the wonderful descriptions that Johns writes (I could smell the pig farm) and Green Pastures is a wonderful read. I highly recommend it and look forward to book 2. I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.

Three sisters and their somewhat cantankerous father are the primary focus of Green Pastures, but this isn't a typical Amish story. Tabitha Schrock left her Amish faith to marry an Englischer, but her divorce has brought her back to Shepherd's Hill. She's even been welcomed back into the community and permitted by the bishop to serve as the local veterinarian. A female Amish veterinarian? Uncommon, but there's even more! Tabitha's sister Amanda longs for a husband and home but she's given up hope and her other sister has personal problems also. Rose's marriage isn't what it should be but how could she ever go against her marriage vows? Author Patricia Johns is known for sweet Amish fiction but this story features so much more! It has well-defined characters, realistic family dynamics, a special Amish community, and the promise of romance. Will Amanda's longing for a husband overshadow her better judgment? Would she really consider bringing Menno Weaver into the Schrock family? I was captivated by the endearing courtship of Amanda and Menno, and I loved the support and encouragement these three sisters shared. If you enjoy stories with hope, faith, and second chances, you will want to read Green Pastures. I can't wait for another Shepherd's Hill visit! I received a complimentary copy from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review.

Green Pastures by Patricia Johns revolves around the three Schrock sisters: Tabitha, Amanda, and Rose. The characters are developed and realistic. I appreciate seeing that Amish people are not perfect. The Amish struggle with the same issues as Englischers (alcoholism, stubborn fathers, gossipy relatives, negative thoughts, infertility, yearning for love, and more) and some problems that are unique to the Amish. The story is well-written and engaging. I liked that the story had a female Amish veterinarian (a rarity). I do not know how she performed her duties in a dress with an apron and a kapp (I would not have lasted a day in a dress). I liked the different story arcs and how they all tied together into one satisfying story. I wish, though, that one sister’s storyline had a better resolution (I cannot tell you because that would be a spoiler). I hope that this sister will be featured in an upcoming book and get the happy ending that she deserves. I like how faith was threaded throughout the book. I finished the story with a smile on my face. Green Pastures is the first installment in The Amish of Shepherd’s Hill series, and I cannot wait for Still Waters to come out at the beginning of November. Green Pastures is a heartwarming tale with a veterinarian sister, marital miseries, a suffering horse, an endearing runt, a bothersome brother, and learning that God is our friend.

I really enjoyed this read, and am thrilled there will be more books coming in this series. This is a faith based read, and makes you realize that being Amish really doesn't insulate you from all problems! We are given some sweet romance, and we meet head on problems of being a farmer, and having a Vet that is Amish? We also see how hard it is for some family member to be free of the stigma of others in their family. The author does give us a look at a dysfunctional family, and how bad things got for them, but through faith we meet one whom struggles, but seems to be winning the fight. This book was a page turner for answers, surprises yes, but a look a different look at the plain life, and with difference, we are all people with our own problems! I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Bethany House, and was not required to give a positive review.
