Book Synopsis



Das Werk der Architekten Hans und Wassili Luckhardt (1890-1954/1889-1972) wurde bis heute nicht angemessen gewürdigt. Deren Bedeutung für die Entwicklung der Architektur zeigt sich schon daran, dass die Architekten Bestandteil der der wichtigsten Überblickswerke über die Architektur des 20. Jahrhunderts sind, etwa bei Giedion, Benevolo, Tafuri, Frampton und Curtis.

Sie waren u.a. Mitglieder der Gläsernen Kette und prägten maßgeblich die Architektur der 1920er bis 1960er Jahre.

Die Luckhardts betrieben in den 1920er Jahren in Berlin ein Architekturbüro zusammen mit Alfons Anker, der aufgrund seiner jüdischen Herkunft nach Schweden emigrierte. Das Werk ist aus heutiger Perspektive als ein kollektives Werk relevant, da sich die unterschiedlichen Temperamente der Protagonisten in einem Facettenreichtum zeigen, der sowohl von utopischen "Formphantasien" bis zu baukonstruktiven Experimenten, von der Möbelgestaltung bis zum Städtebau sowie innovativer Werbearchitektur reicht.

Nach dem 1. WK gehörten sie zum engen Kreis des utopischen Expressionismus, in dessen Geist neben zahlreichen Bauten auch einige spektakuläre Entwürfe entstanden (bspw. für das Deutsche Hygiene-Museum in Dresden von 1920 oder aber für ein Volkstheater von 1921).

Das Buch dokumentiert sämtliche 40 realisierten Bauten der Brüder Luckhardt, vornehmlich in Berlin, aber auch in Brandenburg, München, Hannover, Bremen und Rom. Zwei Essays setzen sich u.a. mit den ungebauten und utopischen Projekten auseinander.

Das Buch erscheint auch in englischer Sprache (978-3-0356-2721-3).



About the Author



Carsten Krohn was born in Hamburg and studied architecture, urban planning and art history at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg, the University of Hamburg and at Columbia University in New York. He obtained a PhD in art history with a study on the reception of Buckminster Fuller in architecture. CarstenKrohn worked in the Berlin offices of Daniel Libeskind and Norman Foster and has taught at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the Technical University of Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin and as professor at Anáhuac University and at the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico. He is the author of books on the work of Peter Behrens, Mies van der Rohe, Hans Scharoun and Erich Mendelsohn, curated the exhibition Unbuilt Berlin and worked with Knut Klaßen on video projects. His photographs have been shown in various exhibitions.

Michele Stavagna studied architecture and the history of architecture at the Università IUAV in Venice, completing his doctorate in the History of Architecture and Urban Design in 2005 with a dissertation on the photobooks of Erich Mendelsohn in the context of his architectural work. He has taught Theory and History of Industrial Design at the Università degli Studi di Trieste (Italy) and lectures regularly at various European universities and at symposia in Europe, Israel and the USA. He is co-author (with Carsten Krohn) of Erich Mendelsohn - Buildings and Projects (Basel: Birkhäuser 2021), has written numerous articles on Erich Mendelsohn, Aldo Rossi and Baldassare Longhena and is editor and translator of the Italian edition of Die Baukunst der neuesten Zeit by Gustav Adolf Platz. Since 2005, Michele Stavagna lives and works in Berlin and is a correspondent for the magazine of the Association of German Architects (BDA) Die Architekt.
