About the Author

Julia Hans, PhD, is a national award-winning essayist who writes about American history and culture. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 2011 with a doctorate in American literature. Formerly, Hans worked as a journalist, writing profiles and features for various Massachusetts newspapers. Local history was part of the beat. A New England transplant, Hans moved to North Carolina to escape the winters and be near family. She started archival research about Pinehurst to prepare for a gig as a history tour guide, which led to this book. Find her work at www.juliahans.com.
