Angola was devastated by a civil war that lasted through much of the latter half of the 20th century and later became an international war involving the United States, Soviet Union/Russia, Cuba, South Africa, and numerous other African nations. Since the end of the civil war in 2002, Angola has become a constitutional republic with a growing economy.

The Dictionary has extensive coverage of Angola's economy, health, education, growth and development, and the arts, including literature, music, theater, and cinema. About the Author

W. Martin James is an emeritus professor at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He has written several books and many articles about Africa. He has met many of the current historically significant people of the nation. Over the last fifteen years, he has made seventeen research trips to southern Africa.
