About the Book
"An illustrated story written from the point of view of monarch butterflies as they search for food and fly through storms during their annual migration"--Book Synopsis
Join the monarchs as they embark on a transcontinental journey home in this moving story about migration. As the sun dawns in Canada, a flutter of monarch butterflies take flight, ready to begin their months-long journey to their ancestral home in Mexico. The migration will not be easy, but it is necessary for the next generation of monarchs to be born. Brought to life with illustrations as vivid as the monarch's iconic orange and black hues, this story invites young readers to experience the monarch's migration from the butterflies' point of view as they search for food, huddle together through storms, and tirelessly fly south. Parents and educators alike will find much to love about this poetically written book. The story touches on how climate change and deforestation are impacting monarchs, and kid-friendly back matter provides additional information about the butterflies, including their life cycle, anatomy, and migratory patterns, as well as several simple ways children can help monarch butterflies themselves.Review Quotes

Every year thousands of monarch butterflies journey up to 3,000 miles to central Mexico. For their spring migration, it takes four generations to go up north, but the fall trip is done by just one generation. The group heading south has never been to Mexico, yet their built-in compass causes large bunches of them band together, and make the trek. The butterflies will fight bad weather, lack of food, and exhaustion. Many will not survive, but a surprising amount do. This book traces their southern trip, and the sort of things that the monarchs will face. The format is done in a picture book; it is a large hardbacked volume with lots of colorful illustrations. Not only will the reader experience “travel” with a group of butteries, there are lots of facts about the them in the back of the book. This includes what monarchs like to eat, the parts of its body, dangers they face, what can be done to help them, and a migratory map. This is a nice way to learn about these amazing creatures. Children four through eight-years-old will enjoy this five-star book. Thank you, Worthy Kids, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own.

“We ride the wind toward these distant relatives we have never met. We circle the grove, settling onto tall firs. Safe at last in our home,” ends the story in Katherine Pryor’s children’s book, Home is Calling: The Journey of the Monarch Butterfly. ~ What ~ This forty-page hardbound with a jacket targets children four to seven years old and focuses on the travels of monarch butterflies. With colorful and engaging artwork that fills both sides of the open pages, it has an easy-to-read font. The ending includes the anatomy and life cycle of a butterfly along with information on milkweed, threats to monarchs, how to get involved, and migration. An author’s note and how to help complete the book. In this short documentary, it explains how the monarch caterpillars hatch in the eastern United States and southern Canada to make their three-thousand-mile-long journey to central Mexico for the winter. The butterflies travel together to go to where they have never been before, nourishing on nectar wherever and whenever they can get it. Whether it is night or day, sunny or stormy, they make their progress to their destination, even though not all make it. ~Why ~ This is a nice picture book that shows how the beautiful orange butterflies survive through thick and thin when they migrate. I appreciate the lovely illustrations, especially the multiple insects flying across the pages. Adding the final four pages is educational to older readers. ~ Why Not ~ Those who do not like learning about the life and sometimes death of migrating butterflies might not care for this book. Sensitive children might get upset reading about the demise of some of these creatures who cannot make the entire trip, but the topic is lightly mentioned. Beginner readers may have trouble with some of the two and three-syllable words. ~ Wish ~ My only concern would be that mentioning three times that not all monarchs make it to their destination might worry young ones (however, this is reality). ~ Want ~ If your young one loves to learn about God’s creatures including the amazing monarchs and how they travel south without any guidance, this would be a great choice. Thanks to Hachette Book Group, WorthyKids, and the author for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.
