Description

About the Book

"International Water Scarcity and Variability considers international water management challenges created by water scarcity and environmental change. Although media coverage and some scholarship tend to cast natural resource shortages as leading inexorably toward war, Shlomi Dinar and Ariel Dinar prove that there are many examples of and mechanisms for more peaceful dispute resolution regarding natural resources, even in the face of water paucity and climate change. The authors base these arguments on both global empirical analyses and case studies. Using numerous examples that focus on North America, Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East, this book asks scholars and policy makers to consider strategies and incentives to help lessen conflict and motivate cooperation under scarcity and increased variability of water resources"--Provided by publisher.

Book Synopsis

International Water Scarcity and Variability considers international water management challenges created by water scarcity and environmental change. Although media coverage and some scholars tend to cast natural resource shortages as leading inexorably toward armed conflict and war, Shlomi Dinar and Ariel Dinar demonstrate that there are many examples of and mechanisms for more peaceful dispute resolution regarding natural resources, even in the face of water paucity and climate change. The authors base these arguments on both global empirical analyses and case studies. Using numerous examples that focus on North America, Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East, this book considers strategies and incentives that help lessen conflict and motivate cooperation under scarcity and increased variability of water resources.

From the Back Cover

"This book offers a wealth of theoretical and empirical insights into how increased water scarcity and variability can lead to conflict and what kinds of institutions and political strategies can help avoid or mitigate conflict. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in climate change and international water issues."--Thomas Bernauer, Professor of Political Science, ETH Zurich, Switzerland

"The authors set out to explore the conditions under which water scarcity may lead to cooperation. This novel theory relating scarcity to treaty formation is buttressed by an impressive array of statistical analyses and evidence from cases. A must-read for scholars as well as policymakers."--Nils Petter Gleditsch, research professor, Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO)

Review Quotes

"The case studies exploring these mechanisms in practice are rich and diverse."-- "Journal of Peace Research"
