Description

Book Synopsis

Discover the art and science of designing, building, and installing DC microgrid systems with this authoritative resource

Introduction to DC Microgrids delivers a comprehensive and concise introduction to the fundamentals of DC microgrid technology. Beginning with the basic concepts of DC systems and their various constituents, the book moves on to a variety of DC architectures and voltage levels of DC microgrid systems. Typical examples, use cases, and applications round out the material to form a practical and accessible resource ideal for students, professionals, and enthusiasts.

Accomplished engineers and authors, Vivek Agarwal and Prajof Prabhakaran, offer readers solved numerical examples in every chapter to shore up the theoretical concepts presented. They also discuss different types of power converters used in several roles in DC microgrid systems and common issues faced by those who install and use them.

Introduction to DC Microgrids makes a compelling case for the merits of using DC microgrids over AC solutions and includes usable techniques to determine optimal placement of loads and sources. You'll also learn from:

  • A complete introduction to DC microgrid systems with discussions of a variety of reported architectures and voltage levels
  • A fulsome description of power electronic converters in DC microgrid systems with simulation and experimental results of several different converters
  • An explanation of DC microgrid control methods, including novel control techniques to minimize voltage regulation and improve load sharing accuracy
  • A treatment of power quality and protection of DC microgrids, including a discussion of how to mitigate voltage fluctuation and harmonic issues

Perfect for doctoral, graduate, and senior undergraduate students in electrical engineering and related programs, Introduction to DC Microgrids also has a place on the bookshelves of diploma students, technicians who install and implement microgrid systems in the field, and industrial professionals interested in electrical sustainability projects.

From the Back Cover

A practical guide to DC microgrid development and implementation as potential subsystems of a smart grid

Introduction to DC Microgrids offers an essential guide to the fundamentals of DC microgrid technology. Microgrid technology has the potential to improve the efficiency and cost-effective delivery of power generated from renewable sources. The authors - noted experts in the field - discuss various architectures and voltage levels of the DC microgrid system and include typical examples and applications of the system. They also discuss the control schemes, power quality and stability aspects. In addition, every chapter contains solved numerical examples to help strengthen the concepts presented.

The authors review the different types of power converters used in various roles in DC microgrid systems and examine common issues associated with DC microgrids such as circulating currents, voltage regulation, voltage imbalance, and more. The book highlights the merits of the DC microgrid compared to AC systems and examines the techniques used to determine optimal placement of loads and sources in a DC microgrid. This important book:

  • Explains the intricacies associated with DC microgrid technology and offers a clear understanding of the topic
  • Discusses energy storage in the context of the working and operating conditions of the DC microgrid system
  • Examines the deployment of DC microgrids that holds promise for more efficient and cost-effective delivery of power generated from renewable sources
  • Includes illustrative case studies, numerical and design examples
  • Highlights the most recent developments, future prospects and applications of DC microgrids

Written for graduate and undergraduate students and industrial professionals, Introduction to DC Microgrids contains a much-needed work that reviews the basic elements of DC microgrid technology.
