pouches weren't as big as it looks and the straps rubbed into my dog a bit

The pack side pack stitching wore out and came off after just a 3 day backpacking trip.

Vest is made well and uses quality materials. Good storage within the pockets, but the vest is a little difficult to put on and fit.

This pack fit my two 50# dogs well for a 4 day 50 mile backpacking trip. I bought 2 and they were slightly different just by color. Red one had the side zipper pockets. Black on had no outside pockets but had lashing loops. Wasn't a big deal but would have like to have both with side pockets.

This product gave both of my dogs blisters and the company refused to refund me for them. The idea is great but the design execution is not.

I have an 85 lb German Shepherd mix whose lanky frame is often at odds with the way typical harnesses fit. The Baxter backpack is extremely adjustable, and fits him perfectly. I also love the large pockets; they easily fit full size water bottles (I put one on each side to ensure load is balanced.) I also love the loops at the top. I hook a collapsable fabric water dish to one. The handle is sturdy, and allows me to control him even if he sees a squirrel or other dog. Overall, the backpack is fantastic for hiking, and I am very satisfied with the product. Because I know Kurgo has excellent customer service and they read these reviews, I'll go ahead and tack on a couple wishlist items: I would love a backpack with (1) breathable mesh top for hotter hiking weather, and (2) removable packs to allow the dog to go swimming without completely taking off the harness. But regardless of my pipe dreams, I really love the Baxter backpack, and would definitely buy it again.

I like the product but the pockets have to be well balanced as far as weight or else it pulls to one side. I got the one recommended for my dogs size but think if it was a better fit it would work better as far as being more snug and less likely to sag. I would recommend this product for a beginner.

Great pet backpack! Our dog, husky-golden retriever approx. 65 lbs, is able to hike long distances (5-10 miles) with no problems or strain on his legs, back, or hips. He typically carries his own food, a collapsible bowl, compostable waste bags, and a Nalgene of water. Saves us a lot of weight, and he has no problems!

Been testing this with my pup during walks. A key to comfort for your pup, much like a human pack, is ensuring that the pack is balanced. The dog doesn't seem to mind it and at this point she gets excited when she sees it.

Title says it all. My dog has worn this on two hikes so far, with increasing weight each time to get her used to it. She'll be wearing it this weekend again. She is a slender dog (40 lbs) and this size fits her well, getting snug enough to not shift around excessively while she walks, runs, and adventures around, but not so tight that it's constricting. She's even already figured out how to shake it back to center if it moves. I currently have no qualms with this bag, but I'll update the review if anything changes. There are a lot of options out there for dog backpacks, but I'm glad I went with this one. Looking forward to lots of happy miles together with this bag. Noting something updated from a review below - The zippers now zip closed towards the rear, stopping the problem mentioned of zips opening when the dog brushes against something.

The pack itself looks nice and does a good job. The only downside I've noticed is that the extra straps dangle and get peed on unless you secure them. I ended up just adding some rubber bands to secure the extra strap length. Would be nice if they came with something already on there to secure them.

I have a husky mix who is about 60lbs and the large fit him well. From the pictures I had through it was a harness where the side pouches detach but they do not. However it is really nice that the pouch is adjustable so you can try to balance the pouches if they are different weights. We used it for a 4 day backpacking trip and it worked pretty well, at the beginning it was packed to the brim, so I wish it had slightly larger packs. I also tried to attach his camping bed which was challenging, it would be nice if they added some places to attach other items. My biggest issue was keeping it from falling to one side or the other. It is a little challenging to adjust on the trail since system for adjusting is under the dog and not that easily adjusted when it was on him. Overall it worked but still in search of a easily adjustable and more secure dog back. In the mean time this was much better than previous packs we have tried.

I ordered two of these backpacks, in both sizes, for my two pups, 40 and 60 lbs, respectively. The smaller pack doesn't hold much, some supplies and treats. The Big Baxter I'm able to pack with a day's worth of water for both of them. I love these packs and both dogs are happy to wear them. Kurgo advertises eight adjustment points....USE THEM ALL! Backpacks should fit snug. Loose backpacks sway, which causes chafing. The bags themselves I moved up as close as I could to the dog's spine to avoid unnecessary swinging. I conditioned my dogs over the course of several weeks, increasing weight and adjusting straps as necessary to make sure both stayed well and comfortable, checking for indentions from a too tight pack and raw places from chafing. We found our sweet spot relatively quickly and we've had zero issues with several day hikes. Once it's adjusted, it stays there! They can run and also rest while wearing these packs. One of my dogs has a strong prey drive and this pack keeps her focused and on trail. And while it's important to balance the two sides, a couple of pounds difference isnt a big deal in this pack as long as it's properly fitted. I've used other packs where that wasn't the case, and also packs that needed constant adjusting. I use zip ties to secure the loose length of strap. One of my dogs is a pitbull so has very little hair, and she's had no issues with rubbing or hair loss. I keep medical tape in her pack along with a towel so I can dry her off if she gets wet to help protect her skin, but so far so good! It seems durable, I've seen no fraying or seams tearing. I'm happy to recommend this pack!!

These would have been a solid ten if the side pockets were a bit bigger, they fit the dogs good on our 30 mile backcountry hike we did in the United Mountains here in Utah.

Definitely well engineered for dog comfort, there is even spine support so they don't get injured, we use this for our 75# very lanky bordercollie/ german shepherd mix, and the big baxter straps had to be tightened down all the way. Adjusting it to fit was simple and easy, I do wish there were sleeves to tie up the loose webbing, I rolled and taped that so he didn't just have streamers of webbing hanging off. Great product. Would purchase again. Best option in this catagory.

It was a little tricky at first adjusting the straps but it's been a great product. Rides pretty well on my dog.

Our pup Willow weighs about 65lbs but she's dense so we probably could've opted for the smaller size, though L worked well when it was fully tightened- it just left us with some extra bulk and excess strap. The pack held her frisbee, food, water and treats no problem and could definitely accommodate her for a longer hike- we will use it often! An area of improvement - this could & should feature a waterproof pocket! Also love the bottle opener feature.

Got this pack for my boy a few months ago and the weather finally made a turn for the better and we were able to take it out on the trail. 3 days and two nights in southern Utah in and out of canyons and we really put this pack to the test. The pockets were big enough for him to carry all his food but adding anymore weight like water might have made it a struggle for him. It rode pretty balanced after some minor adjustments and didn’t seem to bother him in any way (rubbing, chaffing, sliding off). The trail was steep and rocking and he was able to rock hop as if he had nothing on. Some sections of the trail required some scrambling and bouldering, at these sections I was able to use the pack to lift him off and over obstacles out of his skill set, without him slipping out. I am extremely satisfied with this pack. I will say it took a beating after being scrapped and rubbed against sandstone for 3 days but what can handle that type of abuse?
