Book Synopsis

-Katie Kitamura, The New York Times

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

New York Times Notable Book of 2025

"The novel is dense and elliptical, a dreamscape with a powerful undertow." -Katie Kitamura, The New York Times

"Beware of me, my love / beware of the silent one in the desert." This verse by poet Alejandra Pizarnik is found, written in nail polish, on an alley wall next to the body of a mutilated man. The corpse is found by Professor Cristina Rivera Garza, who calls the police. When the detective in charge asks her to examine a photo of the crime scene, her immediate identification of the verse turns her into a key informant in the case. Other bodies soon appear, accompanied by more verses that point to a serial killer. As the detective draws up a list of suspects, the professor receives a sinister note from an apparent stalker.

First published in 2007, Death Takes Me is thrilling and visionary novel. The winner of a Pulitzer Prize and a compelling voice in Latin American literature, Cristina Rivera Garza employs many of the tropes of the classic detective story and turns them on their head, raising unsettling questions about death and desire.
