However, for the rest of his companions, the trip is merely an excuse to escape their routines and a chance, perhaps their last, to contemplate the splendorous valley before it is flooded and turned into a dam. But the peaceful canoe excursion turns bloody when they come across some locals who brutally attack them. It is then that their peaceful adventure turns into a nightmare in which they will have to fight for their very lives, in a lethal game where man is both hunter and prey, and the wild surroundings of the valley become a graveyard of rock and whitewater for those who lack the strength or fortune to survive. A prodigious narrative tour de force in which action and suspense are masterfully blended.

About the Author

James Dickey nació en Atlanta en 1923 y sirvió en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, durante la cual realizó más de cincuenta vuelos de combate. Tras licenciarse y obtener un máster en la Universidad de Vanderbilt, enseñó Literatura y trabajó en publicidad. En 1965 ganó el National Book Award y el Melville Cane Award de la Poetry Society of America por su poemario Buckdancer's Choice. Su primera novela, Liberación (1970; Impedimenta, 2025), recibió el Prix Médicis Étranger en 1971 y fue adaptada a la gran pantalla por John Boorman en 1972 con guion del propio autor. Dickey destacó asimismo como gran poeta de su generación; en sus poemas aparecían a menudo pilotos, jugadores de fútbol americano y campesinos, y sus temas incluían la naturaleza, la metafísica, la historia y la religión. A lo largo de su vida publicó más de veinte libros, entre ellos varios poemarios, colecciones de ensayo y la novela Hacia el mar blanco (1993). Fue miembro de la Academia Americana de las Artes y las Letras y del Instituto Nacional de las Artes y las Letras. En 1996, recibió el premio Harriet Monroe a toda una vida dedicada a las letras estadounidenses. Falleció el 19 de enero de 1997 en Columbia, seis días después de dar su última clase.
