Description

About the Book

"A young Amish woman, attended by the country veterinarian, delivers a baby that's eighteen pounds and twenty-seven inches long, and no one in Lakota, Wisconsin, knows what to make of the boy. Raised by his brother in rural poverty, Gabriel Fisher walks at eight months, communicates with animals, and possesses extraordinary athletic abilities. When his older brother dies by suicide, Gabriel is taken in by devout Amish grandparents, who hide him away from the English world. At age seventeen, and nearly eight feet tall, Gabriel is spotted working in a hay field by the local football coach, and his life changes. In 'Life, and death, and giants, ' Gabriel's unique story is told by those whose lives are transformed by him--Doc Kennedy, the veterinarian who delivers him and becomes his mentor; Hannah Fisher, Gabriel's Amish grandmother, haunted by her daughter's death and troubled by deep gaps in her faith; Billy Walton, the salty bar owner and bridge between the Amish and English communities in Lakota; and Trey Beathard, the football coach, who tries to mentor Gabriel as his fame spreads throughout the world. Threaded with the poems of Emily Dickinson, 'Life, and death, and giants' weaves together an unforgettable story of faith, family, buried secrets, and everyday miracles"--

Book Synopsis

A heart too big for this world. A life that changes everyone.

"Life, and Death, and Giants is an intriguing and alluring novel from beginning to end. The events are startling, sad, amusing, invigorating, and informative. Reading it is like meeting a family that you never knew existed and becoming close friends in a few weeks. Highly recommended." --Jane Smiley, author of Lucky and A Thousand Acres

Gabriel Fisher was born an orphan, weighing eighteen pounds and measuring twenty-seven inches long. No one in Lakota, Wisconsin, knows what to make of him. He walks at eight months, communicates with animals, and seems to possess extraordinary athletic talent. But when the older brother who has been caring for him dies, Gabriel is taken in by his devout Amish grandparents who disapprove of all the attention and hide him away from the English world.

But it's hard to hide forever when you're nearly eight feet tall. At seventeen, Gabriel is spotted working in a hay field by the local football coach. What happens next transforms not only Gabriel's life but the lives of everyone he meets.

Life, and Death, and Giants is a moving story of faith, family, buried secrets, and everyday miracles.

Review Quotes

"Straddling the Wisconsin of the Amish and 'English, ' Life, and Death, and Giants assays the limitations and temptations of the godly and the worldly. Ron Rindo has fashioned a small-town novel as magical and moral as a tall tale."- - Stewart O'Nan, author of Snow Angels and Songs for the Missing

"With Life, and Death, and Giants, Ron Rindo has performed literary magic. This is a remarkable, profoundly moving novel." -Larry Watson, author of Montana 1948

"Like all the best tall-tales, legends, and folk stories, the size and skill of the hero matters to the narrative. But what matters more is the hero's heart, and their willingness to sacrifice for a greater good to show their community and indeed, their country, what is possible, what is virtuous, what is best. The big beating heart of this novel is Gabriel Fisher, a 21st Century Paul Bunyan. But even more than Fisher is the book's writer, Ron Rindo, who has crafted a novel that is remarkably generous, kind, and graceful. This is a novel that still believes in magic, goodness, and everyday heroes." --Nickolas Butler, author of Shotgun Lovesongs and A Forty Year Kiss

"Ron Rindo's deeply attentive and broadly generous novel, Life, and Death, and Giants, makes the sturdiest of stools out of its title's three legs as it examines what happens when the mysterious interrupts the certainties we all cling to. Rindo reminds us, through his careful and loving prose, that the mysterious and the certain are always partnered, and if we choose to, if we pay close enough attention to ourselves and the worlds around us, and if we share the news of what we see, we may build our own sturdy stools, and step up, and discover the giant in us all." --Karen Shepard, author of Kiss Me Someone and The Celestials

"Spellbinding ... surprising and moving ... This will linger in readers' minds." --Publishers Weekly

"Extraordinary ... With its profound portraits of both Amish and secular characters and their luminously real community, this is a must-read." --Kirkus (starred review)

"Life, Death and Giants is a rare novel. I found it almost unbearably moving, yet hopeful and transcendent in all the best ways. Just read it. Lose yourself in it. Be changed by it." --Jennie Godfrey, author of The List of Suspicious Things

"Skillful and meticulous ... Seamlessly blending the fantastical and the real, Rindo's novel is an elegant testament to how an entire community is touched and transformed by the open heart and generosity of one kind, gentle, extraordinary human being." --Booklist (starred review)

"Life, and Death, and Giants by Ron Rindo reads as a legit 'food for the soul' kind of novel--poignant and funny." --Real Simple

"We didn't know the name Ron Rindo before this stunning novel came our way, but we're running the fan club now." --Oprah Daily

"Reads like a warm clear word-of-mouth smash" --Chicago Tribune

"A beautifully painted story that feels like a new modern classic." --People Magazine

Beautiful story

This book was just so wonderfully written. At some points it had me in tears. It is a heartfelt story of a giant young man who due to such horrible circumstances was being raised by his grandparents. They were Amish. He took to the Amish life well and when he was young all the animals would want to be close to Gabriel. He was a gentle giant. By giant I mean as a child he was about seven feet tall and weighed in at close to 400 lbs. His grandfather made him a custom bed and also raised all the door entrances so he could fit through without hurting himself. He would help the local veterinarian Doc Kennedy and go on this rounds to help the ailing animals in his town. At a certain time in the life of a young Amish they are allowed to go into the "real" world and experience it. It is hoped that they return to the Amish ways. Gabriel was asked to play football on the high school team. With him on the team they were undefeated. He was then recruited to a college team where he also excelled. But when there an accident happened that ended his football career. He went on to other things. The story is told beautifully by the author who incorporates four different POV's. One being the mom, one being the Doc, one being the local bartender and one being the football coach. You get to learn about the Amish ways and lifestyle and how it can impact your life. You learn what it means to be a good person and help people. Also, you learn that it is difficult for some in the Amish faith. Hannah, the mom was struggling at times. As she watched her grandson travel to far off places, she herself was stuck in her Amish ways. This was such an interesting, heart wrenching read. It will definitely stay with me for a long while. Thanks to #netgalley, #stmartinspress and @rrindoauthor for an ARC of this beautiful read. All opinions are my own.

This broke me and moved me in the best ways

My heart broke for Hannah, and I found myself sobbing right alongside her, sobbing for the ache, for the weight of love and loss this story carries. Life, and Death, and Giants moved me in ways I didn’t expect, over and over again. It’s the kind of book that lingers between readings, tugging at your thoughts when you’re away from it, making you ache to return. Gabriel’s life is extraordinary, but what truly gripped me wasn’t just his size or abilities, it was the depth of humanity pulsing through these pages. A heart too big for this world, a life that touches everyone it brushes against. Every character felt achingly real, flawed yet full of grace, and their choices made me think hard about faith, family, and the ways love can both wound and heal. This is a story rich with beauty and sorrow, where miracles are quiet and everyday, and where grief is as present as hope. I wish I had all the right words to capture how it made me feel, but maybe that’s the point. It’s a book you don’t just read, you experience. Ron Rindo has written something powerful here. Tender, heartbreaking, and unforgettable.

This story is magical in its own way filled with complexities of life on various levels. It’s very well written with multiple points of views. The author uses Gabriel, an oversized and strong character, to show compassion, forgiveness and unconditional love. Throughout the book, there’s the power of words and meaningful poems to give us an imagination for being there. It’s one that will connect with readers with their feelings and experiences in life.
