Math Mammoth Grade 5-B Worktext - by Maria Miller (Paperback)

About the Book

Math Mammoth Grade 5-B worktext is the student book for the 2nd half of 5th grade. It covers decimal arithmetic, fraction arithmetic, classifying triangles and quadrilaterals, and volume.

Book Synopsis

Math Mammoth Grade 5-B Worktext is the second student book in Math Mammoth grade 5 curriculum meant for the latter half of 5th grade. This is the full color version of the 2023 edition. Please note: The worktext does not include the answer key. The answer keys for grade 5 are sold as a separate book.

The main areas of study in Math Mammoth Grade 5-B worktext are:

• decimal arithmetic
• fraction arithmetic (all operations with fractions)
• geometry: review of angles area and perimeter; drawing circles; classifying triangles & quadrilaterals; volume of rectangular prisms

Chapter 6 continues our study of decimals. The focus is on multiplying decimals by decimals dividing decimals by decimals and conversions between measuring units.

Chapter 7 covers the addition and subtraction of fractions - another topic of focus for 5th grade besides decimals. The most difficult topic of this chapter is adding and subtracting unlike fractions which is done by first converting them to equivalent fractions with a common denominator.

In chapter 8 we study the multiplication and division of fractions from various angles.

Chapter 9 takes us to geometry starting with a review of angles and polygons. From there students will learn to classify triangles and quadrilaterals and will study the concept of volume in the context of right rectangular prisms (boxes).

Features

• Math Mammoth focuses on conceptual understanding. It explains the "WHY" so your children can understand the math not just learn "HOW" to do it.
• The curriculum is mastery-oriented. This means it concentrates fairly long on a topic delving into its various aspects. This promotes conceptual understanding as opposed to spiral curricula that often tend to jump from topic to topic too much.
• Very little teacher preparation is required.
• The curriculum has no separate teacher's manual nor is it scripted. The introduction to each chapter has some notes for the teacher concerning the material in the chapter. All the instruction is written directly to the student in the worktext and there also exist accompanying videos where you can see Maria herself teach the material.

Review Quotes

I just had a comment. I homeschooled my 2 oldest kids from K-6 using Math Mammoth from 2nd or 3rd grade and on until they went to school. My son went straight into advanced math and is now a sophomore and has already completed Alg 1, 2, Geometry and Stats with all A (most classes a 100%). He has won math Olympics and is always the top student in his class. My daughter is also an amazing math student (although not even her fav subject), and she has also received all A and between 99/100% in each course. They both have attributed their Math Mammoth foundation to their success multiple times over the years. Just wanted to let you know!

Thank you for the wonderful math resources you provide! We have used Math Mammoth for 4 years in our homeschool, and particularly enjoy the work-text format and thorough, mastery-based approach. The video lessons and math learning games are the cherry on top. Thank you for all the work you have put into these over the years.

Sincerely,
