Description

About the Book

In this lyrical account of a monarch butterfly's life cycle and environmental impact, rhythmic prose and intriguing facts bring this beautiful insect flying right off the page.

Book Synopsis

Bold, gold, the chrysalis gleams. And deep down inside . . . the butterfly dreams.

Every year, monarch butterflies migrate to warmer climates for overwintering months. However, changing environments make it continually more difficult to find food and places to lay eggs. In this nonfiction picture book, the monarch's life cycle is detailed in lyrical verse as stunning art accompanies each stage in the butterfly's life.

The most recognizable butterfly, monarchs are classified as a vulnerable species by the IUCN, and face drastic challenges when it comes to locating food sources--milkweed. Milkweed for Monarchs is the perfect resource for young readers to learn more about these beautiful insects and how they can foster monarch-friendly environments in their own backyard. Backmatter includes actionable ways for readers to help this vulnerable species.

Gorgeous Book Filled With Information

Monarch Admirer - 1 year ago
Christine Van Zandt’s beautiful poem has the rhythm of a butterfly on the wing! She begins with the monarchs’ migration as they forage for milkweed, through their caterpillar stage, and finally to their metamorphosis into a butterfly. On each page spread there is additional material for the budding naturalist. This information gives a more detailed explanation of the process of the monarch’s journey and transformation. Living in the northeast United States I’ve enjoyed seeing monarch butterflies from summer to fall. The gorgeous illustrations by Alejandra Barajas in Milkweed for Monarchs lets me take an in-depth, detailed look at these most decorative and amazing insects. I highly recommend this book for children, teachers, parents and all citizen scientists!
