Description

About the Book

Miriam and her people have prayed for deliverance from the cruel tyranny of Egypt for generations. She believes her brother is the long-awaited answer to their pleas. But how can the exiled prince-turned-shepherd Moses stand against the most powerful man in the world?

Book Synopsis

She has prayed for deliverance from Egypt. But perhaps the greatest liberation happens within the heart.

From the very beginning, Miriam has lived in her younger brother's shadow. Thrust into the role of protective older sister before Moses was even born, she will grow up into a woman who not only keeps her family's secret but bears the burden of leading a new nation.

In her mind, she knows that she is serving both her God and her people. But in her heart, Miriam yearns for more. She longs to experience the privileges Moses has--to talk with God face-to-face. But when God finally does speak directly to her, the outcome is not at all what she expects.

With her impeccable research and keen eye for detail, bestselling author Jill Eileen Smith offers this epic novel to fill in the gaps in Miriam's story, following her from childhood to motherhood, obscurity to notoriety, and yearning to fulfillment as she learns that what God promises He provides--in His own perfect timing.

"Smith does an excellent job of bringing her characters to life . . . A memorable and noteworthy rendering of the atmosphere and figures of the scriptures."--Booklist starred review

loved this biblical fiction story!

I absolutely love biblical fiction and I especially love books by this author so I was thrilled to have a chance to read it! I read this book in about 2 days because it was interesting and easy to read in my opinion. The book was divided up into multiple parts (5 parts) and spanned over 40 years. It was interesting to read about the life of Moses thru Miriam’s eyes as well as the time period and the slavery of the Jews. There were a couple parts in the story that I questioned whether they were from scripture or just fiction added to enhance the scripture. But the story and characters lives felt real and alive to me which I loved! I love reading biblical fiction because it makes the stories and characters more relatable and human to me. I really enjoyed this book! I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.

Review from Rambles of a SAHM

5 out of 5 stars
Fitzysmom - 4 years ago
Miriam's Song may be Jill Eileen Smith's best book yet! I've read all of her other biblical fiction and I am always impressed with the detail and accuracy she brings to each story. If you've not yet read one of her books you need to treat yourself soon. In the biblical account Moses is the main character, as he should be. Miriam is his older sister and we meet her with the account of her brother's birth. After that the story shifts primarily to Moses. But who is Miriam? What was going on in her life in the intervening years between Moses' birth and the time when the Israelites are set free? Jill fills in the gaps with information we know and what we can assume was taking place. Before I read one of her books I like to read over the biblical account so I can keep in mind what is fact and what is fiction. Every time I have been impressed with her ability to merge the two while remaining dedicated to the historical record. If you've never read biblical fiction because you are hesitant about the fiction aspect I urge you to give Miriam's Song a try. I think you will lose yourself in the beauty of the story of a woman chosen by God to uphold His servant Moses. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading many more by her. I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

Highlighting Miriam

4 out of 5 stars

In the Bible, not much is revealed about Miriam, the older sister of Moses, after she connects her mother with the Egyptian princess who rescued him from the Nile river. But behind every mention that is found in Scripture, there is certainly a story, and Jill Eileen Smith has put together a wonderful tome that chronicles the life of Miriam. We get to know her as a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and leader of the Israelite women. I loved how she was especially sensitive to the Lord, and that was evident as she lived her life and influenced others. Even though I am familiar with the account of Moses and the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, this novel is written in such a way that I yearned to know what would happen next, even though I knew what would occur next. This is the joy of reading Biblical fiction, and Jill Eileen Smith has penned an excellent account of this time in Biblical history. Readers of Christian and Biblical fiction will certainly enjoy this novel, as well as those with an interest in the life and deeds of Moses. I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Revell, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

Wonderful Biblical Fiction

5 out of 5 stars
Leonas Lines - 4 years ago
Book Review: "Miriam's Song" by Jill Eileen Smith Miriam, was Moses and Aaron's sister, she is first mentioned in the book of Exodus verse 2:4: "and his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him" The bible verse is in regard to the time when Moses' mother, Jochedbed, placed baby Moses in a basket in the Nile River near the place where the Egyptian Princess, Hatshepsut came to bathe, in order to hide him from the Egyptians who had been ordered by Pharaoh, to kill all newborn Hebrew male babies. Jochedbed and the family felt the baby Moses was chosen of God for a special purpose, and so prayed that he would be found and rescued by the Pharoh's daughter, Hatshepsut, who was not in favor of her father's order to kill male Hebrew babies. Young Miriam, who was Moses older sister, was told to hide in the bulrushes near the river and watch to see what would happen to her brother, baby Moses. Have you ever wondered how Miriam thought and felt about all of this? She was a young Hebrew girl, who had to face an Egyptian princess, she had to be brave to speak up, and she had to watch as the princess took her baby brother away. Then, in later years, she had to go through those terrible years of bondage that was put upon her people, always wondering, praying and waiting for deliverance. Not knowing what was happening to her brother, Moses, yet keeping up hope that maybe he would be the one who would somehow set the Hebrew people free. Jill Eileen Smith did a wonderful job of imagining what possibly might have taken place during that time by combining fact with fiction to weave this wonderful story about Miriam, Moses, and Aaron and that period of time between the years Moses was born until the time the Israelites reached the promised land. I enjoyed reading this book very much and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading old testament biblical fiction. I received a copy of this book from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, in exchange for an honest review. All comments are my own.

Historical Fiction

I was very excited to see this book come up for review through the Revell Reads program and extra excited to be chosen to read and review this book. I have never been disappointed in a book by Ms Smith and this is not an exception. The Bible doesn't tell us a lot about Miriam but this book gave a new insight into what she may have been like. The characters were very well developed and believable. The story flowed well and kept my interest throughout. The editing was also very well done, one minor error that I noticed and nothing to interfere with my enjoyment. Ms Smith has a way of bringing these events to life and has you thinking about the surrounding elements in a new way. This review is my own opinion and freely given. I would recommend this book and I give it a rare, for me, 5 out of five-star rating.

Fictional Story of Moses Sister, Miriam

3 out of 5 stars
Suspenseful - 4 years ago
Based on the Biblical story of Miriam, Moses’s sister, this book documents Miriam’s life from a young girl through her death. It addresses what it’s like living in slavery in Egypt and to live in the shadow of the great leader, Moses, who talked to God as a friend. Although this account is fictional, I enjoyed the story and speculating what it was like to live during the Israelites slavery in Egypt. I did think the author could have speculated more and expanded on some of those details. And I appreciated Miriam’s perspective while they were wandering in the desert and what it was like for a woman. I thought the author did a nice job with her account. I did feel there were parts of the book which concentrated too much on Moses and not enough on Miriam. And I was surprised the author didn’t mention how Miriam lead the women in a song of deliverance after crossing the Red Sea; after all, the book’s title was Miriam’s Song. I appreciated that the author didn’t make all the Egyptians out to be bad guys. Sprinkled here and there were people who were kind to the Israelites. The emotion portrayed in the novel was well described and I found myself being caught up in the drama of some of the characters. Another thing I admired was the relationship between Moses, Aaron and Miriam. There were periodic times of connecting and renewing their bond. I didn’t particularly care for the section about Moses taking a second wife, it all sounded covert and illicit. And earlier in the book it sounded as though Moses had no time for a wife. Overall, it was a good effort to document Miriam’s story as there is very little information about Miriam in the Bible.

Miriam's Song is another fabulous read by Jill Eileen Smith. I have always loved her Biblical fiction and this one is no different. I enjoyed Miriam being brought to life and the author’s vision of how she lived. It was interesting and captivating to see this point of view of Moses. I thought it was a great book to read. I am giving Miriam's Song four and a half stars. As always, I will be looking forward to more by Jill Eileen Smith in the future. This one is definitely not one to be missed. I received a paperback copy of Miriam's Song from the publisher. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Great historical fiction

5 out of 5 stars
Sunnie Reviews - 4 years ago
I enjoyed this new book by Jill Eileen Smith so much! It tells the story of the sister of Moses who laid his woven basket into the Nile in hopes of saving him from death. I love how the author interweaves the actual historical events and the fiction to bring the life of Miriam into an interesting and gripping story. Miriam is presented as a loving and faithful sister to Moses throughout her life despite the trials that the Egyptians place upon her and the people of Israel. The book is written in a very easy to read and understandable format making the Biblical story truly come to life. I felt that the book was so interesting and engaging that it was hard to put it down. It became one of my favorite books quite quickly. I hope to read many more of this author's books. Miriam becomes very real and you can feel her feelings throughout the book. It made this historical person very easy to understand and she became a real important and supportive person in these important historical events and times. I received a copy of this book from Revell Publishing. All thoughts are my own.
