About the Author

Jessica Dunham lives in Phoenix with her husband and two spunky dogs, but inherited a family summer home on Lake Champlain in Vermont. This seemed heavenly to her, until she tried to imagine getting there from halfway across the country. Then it required some effort and a little imagination. The only way to transport the herd from one place to another was to pile into a Jeep and drive.

On these drives, she came to appreciate the spontaneity a road trip provides, pulling over for a fruit stand or stopping to take pictures at a scenic overlook, as well as the sense of discovery. This is how she first encountered Route 66. It's also how she explored the Finger Lakes of upstate New York, followed the prairielands of Nebraska, dipped into the cornfields of Indiana, carved through Kentucky (with a stop at a distillery or two), and drove the Ozarks of Arkansas.

Formerly a travel guide editor at Madden Media, Jessica is now a freelance travel writer. She is also the author of Moon Route 66 Road Trip and The Open Road. Her writing has been featured in PHOENIX magazine, Valley Guide, Phoenix Travel Guide, Arizona Visitor's Guide, Midwest Living, Phoenix New Times, Modern Luxury, Annapolis Visitors Guide, Connecticut Visitors Guide, Runner's World, Jane, Discover South Carolina, and more.

Beyond the Expected Sights

I'm an Arizona native who's lived in both Phoenix and Tucson, and I've read countless repetitive recommendations of the best things to do and the must sees and over time you just kind of learn what to expect? Not with this book. This book is filled with special gems that locals might need that extra push to do (visit Taliesen West or go to the Tucson rodeo, for example), as well as lesser-known sights and sounds that, often, don't require much planning to enjoy.

Fantastically curated

I live in Phoenix and visit Tucson regularly, and I can attest that this book covers the must-see stuff: museums, restaurants, hiking trails, etc. But it devotes just as much ink (and maybe more) to small pleasures—like where to watch a sunset, buy custom cowboy boots or peruse independent bookstore aisles. I’ll offer my judgement of this book based on two of the 52 things beneath its cover: exploring Phoenix’s mid-century modern architecture and taking a bike ride around The Loop in Tucson. As a local, I’ve always wanted to do both, but haven’t gotten around to either. Touring Phoenix’s fantastic mid-century modern architecture scene is daunting because the metro area is the size of a New England state. How do you go about seeing it? This book outlines a self-guided tour of three neighborhoods (none of them far apart), and offers directions and descriptions for each one. It also provides details about Modern Phoenix Week (when many homeowners open up their houses for guided tours), including how to book reservations. That’s it: daunting made doable. As for The Loop—a recently completed, 140-mile, interlocking system of bikeways in Tucson—the book breaks down basics like when to go, what to wear and how to download a map; but it also details the history of the trail and what sections are best for riding past public art. (One gripe: I would have loved to see an overview of the trail instead of a full-page photo of a generic bicycle.) Practically speaking, I appreciate the “Connect With” recommendations at the end of each main article—usually 2-3 geographically logical add-ons—which can help you transform one good idea into an entire day (and/or night) of sightseeing. I also dig the book’s small size: It easily fits into a car’s center console or a small daypack/purse. If you’re planning to spend time in Phoenix or Tucson—or even if you live here and want a resource for entertaining friends/family—this book is definitely worth the investment.

This book is a must have for anyone visiting or living in AZ. I have lived in Phoenix for over 30 years and taken countless road trips and weekend getaways with my family over the years so kinda thought we had done it all or at least knew it existed. Let's just say I was wrong:) This book showed me so many new places to visit and things to do that I didn't even know existed. I love the way Jessica categorizes the different activities and highlights the "why, where and timing" for them as well. The "Why go" is key. Nothing like taking a long drive to end up somewhere and realize your weren't really feeling it at that moment but someone told you that you gotta go here and check it out. This takes the guess work out of it and helps you choose based on what you are feeling like doing. We keep this book in our family room now and we use it as a guide and inspiration for the upcoming weekend and looking forward to doing the same the next time we have friends or family in town as well. Well done Jessica Dunham!!!

What a joyful read. Not only because I discovered many new things in my hometown and state to experience, but because the author shares her passion for the people and places she encounters whole-heartedly. Definitely not for passive travelers, this book is for people who eat at community tables and make friends with the people they're squished against at concerts.

I have lived in the Phoenix area for 12 years and was amazed by all the unique and different things to see and do in this book. Jessica Dunham has a fantastic way of capturing the area in a personal, authentic and charming way. I have bookmarked so many new things to do in this book from checking out secret swimming holes to chowing down on some soul food! The beautiful pictures make it even more fun to browse and find what to discover next!

The author’s voice shines through making readers feel as if the book was written by a friend. Quick quips and anecdotes help add personality and charm to this travel guide. As a local Phoenician, I was delighted to learn about day trips and offerings just outside of my bubble. It can be hard to remember the many offerings of our city when trying to drum up a creative date idea or somewhere to bring guests. This book covers it all - and even more, helps stack potential ideas together to create extra lovely afternoons. I’m excited to have this for our own use in the current moment. It would be also make an excellent book for lobbies, airbnbs, friends/clients/coworkers who are moving to or travel often to Arizona - even someone missing Harkins popcorn, lol.

This is a handy, nicely sized guidebook to Phoenix and Tucson that highlights some great hidden gems in each city. I liked the layout and the personal connections the author made with different activities. There's also a handy linking device at the end of each "chapter" that lets you plan a day with multiple things to do that are related. I highly recommend this book for discovering new and surprising things about the cities.

I'm as close to a 'native' Phoenician as you can get (been here since I was 2), and I found this book FILLED with things I hadn't done before! When you have one of those weekends when you think 'what should we do', this book should be your go-to guide! There are great local Phoenix activities, as well as easy day-trips and things to do all throughout Arizona (as well as in Tucson). This book also provides great background on the locations and events and really helps you see the significance they play in our communities. I can't wait to cheer on Luche Libre at Crescent Ballroom and try a drink at Greenwood Brewing!

Great resource - 3 years ago
What a fantastic book. Filled with details on fun activities for everyone, adults as well as kids. Outdoors, arts, events, restaurants and bars, sports, and shopping. Well written with thoughtful comments and directions. A beautiful book with great photos. I have lived in Arizona for close to 40 years, and was surprised there were so many things I had never heard off. Cannot wait to check them out. I wholeheartedly recommend this guide to anyone who lives in or is visiting Phoenix and/or Tucson.
