Book Synopsis
"Today, dangerous threats to the world shared by Dragons, calls for special teamwork; an unprecedented alliance of dragons and humans.
The Dragons of Romania series takes place in the 21st century. It's about intelligent dragons who live all over the world in our modern times. They have their own network of communication and speak any language; whether animal or human. Dragons can shapeshift to blend into their surroundings, camouflaging themselves like a chameleon or an octopus to match the colors and textures around them to remain hidden from unpredictable humans. The perfect disguise for living on Earth.
Beyond the vast Transylvanian forests of Romania, hidden deep within undiscovered caves of the rugged Carpathian Mountains, are the homes of many of the oldest species of dragons on earth.
They have lived for thousands, some even millions, of years in the deepest part of the earth's crust.
The oldest of all is wise Lumea, the greatest teacher of young dragons. His newest student, Tanarul, is a mere 200 years old. The two of them are embarking on a world tour to meet and study both the Greater Dragons of history and the tiny Lesser Dragons, all of whom have personal stories to tell about their legendary encounters with humans throughout the centuries.
Lumea has very little use for humans and, prefers his entire species remain known as legendary creatures of myth, rather than risk association with that troublesome race. Tanarul has problems being considered a myth, but respectfully follows his teacher's wisdom in the matter.
Throughout their global discoveries, Tanarul is introduced to dragons of fame, such as the nine headed Hydra of the Hercules fables; Tiamat, the goddess dragon of Ancient Mesopotamia; Quetzelcoatl, the feathered serpent dragon of the Mayan culture; Cosmina, the granddaughter of the dragon of St. George, the toxic Basilisk; the Bunyip, the bulldog-faced dragon of Australia; the gigantic Behemoth, and dozens more of the most feared creatures of human history. From them, Tanarul is educated in the dragon's point of view and learns the truth about his civil and misunderstood species.
But their journey quickly takes a turn toward high adventure as they discover the unstable state of their natural world, caused mainly by humankind's destruction and disregard for the ecology. The polluted oceans and melting icecaps are causing problems for dragons and humans alike. The great dragon Leviathan, who has grown to be the length of Ireland, has begun to stir from his hibernation in the North Pole. His wanderings could destroy the planet. There is only one choice. The League of Dragons must find allies among the humans to save both their races.
Review Quotes
Review by Michelle Kelly
Parents and Educators on the hunt for young adult books; wait until you see what Dragons of Romania has to offer. First, it is a tremendous fictional read with good quality characters. Teacher (Lumea-Veche) and student (Tanarul) are the main focal point on a journey to learn the history of dragons; what's fact and what's myth. Their respectful relationship is very similar to one we saw grow in a certain wizard tale. As we, the readers, follow their journey we learn nonfiction facts about our Earth and world history, ecology, climatology, geography, and even endangered species. Oh, and have you heard of a dragon who has a cave full of computers and is capable of communicating to humans world-wide? Yes, even safety on the internet is covered. As a reptile and amphibian conservation enthusiast, I cannot speak highly enough about the lessons Dragons of Romania has to teach us. I cannot wait to read the next book, until then, happy reading
"5 Stars - A great choice for dragon enthusiasts of any age!," By Maggie Knapp April 29, 2017 Middle School/High School Librarian
Dragon-lovers are in for a treat! DRAGONS OF ROMANIA struck me as a sort of field guide for learning more about different types of dragons, from the highly imaginary, to those from literature, the Bible, and even Ollie (for those of my generation, who remember Kukla, Fran and Ollie from TV.) Author Charlie Rose ties the story together as elder dragon/teacher Lumea instructs dragon/student Tanarul and others in the history of dragon lore. Illustrator Dan Peeler's detailed black and white illustrations bring the dragons to life. They appear every 5-8 pages or so, adding lively visuals of the Tatzelworm Dragon, the Ghimpat, the speedy Fulger dragon, and many more.
Author Charlie Rose researched dragon lore in Romania and elsewhere, and his attention to details is apparent in the writing. The book includes a short glossary of Romanian terms. This book is the first in The League of Dragons series. A great choice for middle grade fantasy enthusiasts, or anyone of any age who wants to know more about dragons from literature, myth and the imagination.
