Description

1554 Enlightened Dark Ale from New Belgium Brewing has a surprisingly bright taste and a dry, chocolaty finish. This craft beer is evocative of the dark brews enjoyed in Belgian taverns 500 years ago. 1554 defies the style guidelines of modern beer. Although dark in color, 1554 is not a porter, stout, schwarzbier, or bock. Rather, it is a rebirth of a lost beer style called zwert (Flemish for black), which uses gruit for bittering. The oldest reference to zwert beer comes from 1285. However, our brewing inspiration came from a book published in 1554, which was the height of popularity for zwertbeer. First released in 1998, our whimsical improvisation includes a variety of specialty dark malts, a dash of licorice root, and a European lager yeast that’s fermented at ale temperatures. Its complex flavor creates a satisfying, full mouthfeel. Even though it's a dark beer, it still balances brightness with depth. It's not a porter, not a stout—it's 1554. Brewed by New Belgium Brewing, a certified B-Corp and proud member of 1% for the Planet. 6% ABV. UOM is 12 fluid ounces. Count per pack: six pack, bottles.

1554 is the best beer I have ever had.

1554 is the best beer in the world. The perfect blend of ingredients for a perfect beer.

What time is it? 6 minutes till 4pm, 1554!!

Not a beer dri ker until 1554. I jad a restaurant and the vendor gave me a sample. It has been my go to since that time. So much so that when I moved to Cypress, Tx, I asked my local liquor store to carry, which they did for me. Now my weekends are complete!

My favorite brew -- by far.

Smooth, creamy head, love the aroma, love the taste! It's not "full" bodied, but still very good, and leaves a great taste in your mouth when your done. Yeah, this is for 1554 ON TAP. In the bottles it doesn't play out the same. Still a decent beer, but on tap -- my favorite of ALL brews! Only downfall is availability on tap. No problem when I lived in Albuquerque, or anywhere in CO, but in SW VA, and eastern NC, where i live now, you'd think it would be more abundant with the brewery in Asheville, but no. Have not seen it anywhere on tap. A huge disappointment as (this my be hard to believe) the Asheville proximity went into my decision making when I retired and moved down here!

New bottle👎👎

Love the beer. Very down to earth taste. However, the new plain brown bottle with no embossed band around it is not a pleasant bottle to hold. Please do not change the textured label.

Good drinking Beer

best overall drinking porter style brew, smooth to the finish, light sweet roasted coffee caramel flavor that cleans the palate, this is a very well balanced beer easy to drink.

Best Beer Ever!!!

Your review effectively conveys your enthusiasm and love for the beer. However, here is a polished version that maintains your sentiments while adding a bit more structure: --- I recently enjoyed 1554 on tap at a restaurant in Port Washington, WI, and it was incredible! I am completely obsessed! And I am not normally a beer drinker. However, I’ve had trouble finding it anywhere near me, including in Chicago. I live in southeastern WI, and this is the only beer that I have ever been this obsessed about. The taste is so delicious—hearty yet smooth. Please get this back in stock. I would love to know where I can find it locally.

A Dark One for the Beer Lover

I have been drinking 1554's since I was allowed to have a brew. The malty notes and crisp, chocolate finish make this beer more than appetizing. Like NB's description says, it's not a porter or stout. This is a dark, Belgian style ale. So good! Hope I win that bike!

Smooth and gentle, very, very drinkable.

I wouldn’t drink any dark beers, after I sold NBB products for many years, I will give any bold body beers a chance. Now the mighty 1554 is always my go to friend!!

So Hard to just choose on great New Belgium Beer!

There is hardly one flavor that this brewery has produced that has not become my personal favorite. Since they have become available in my location, they quickly became my go to beer and beverage! From the early beer flavors to the new Juice Force flavors - I Love them all !!

Better than Shiner Bock

This beer is similar to many popular dark beers but is smoother and more neutral in taste. My top beer right now. It isn’t as strong as a Guinness or stout beer, isn’t a Bock beer but is in the ball park but a little more flavor and is smoother. It is similar to Xingu which was served in high end steak houses in Houston.

Smooth, easy to drink

I haven’t been able to find this variety at my local liquor store but I had a taste when I visited Colorado this summer. Very easy to enjoy with no harsh over the top hoppy- ness. I particularly liked the chocolate and licorice notes but I didn’t get the notes of tobacco's that some reviewers allude to.

Hearty

I'm savoring a 1554 now, dark, rich and hearty "liquid bread" the way the monks intended!
