Great instrument for young aspiring flautists

My child had asked for a flute, but due to their age, their hands would be too small to operate the instrument properly. I didn’t want to just opt for a recorder as it wouldn’t duplicate the way a flute is held, so I started looking for a fife or something similar…knowing the open fingering holes of the fife may be too large for small, child size fingers to seal easily. Then I came across the Toot. There are glowing reviews from music teachers and supporting content available, and in the all black version it looks more like a “real” instrument (important to my kid). I took a chance and ordered one. So far, we’ve only used it with the silicone plugs in place and the practice mouthpiece that teaches positioning. The tone is pleasant for being an introductory instrument, unlike the average plastic recorder which can be very grating and harsh. The keys certainly make proper fingering easier for small hands, so this achieved what was desired. With some tutoring to learn how to play notes, my child can now play confidently with this “Toot” flute, and should be able to transition to the regular mouthpiece and open holes once they have practiced more. If they continue to play it regularly, it will also let me know that a “real” flute (when they are old enough to hold it properly) would not sit and gather dust…a great advantage for this product as a quality flute is exponentially more expensive than this practice instrument. Overall, it made my child happy because it feels substantial and “grownup”, and has allowed them to practice an instrument that they would otherwise be too young to play properly. As a parent, it saved money and has allowed me to see if the flute is something that will actually sustain my child’s interest without investing in a more costly instrument upfront. This seems like a good introduction for a beginner and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
