Description

Book Synopsis

This second title in the new, pocket-size Joseph Campbell Essentials series presents the mythologist's most quotable writings on the universal path of adventure, transformation, and return, exploring the world's enduring myths and beckoning us to embrace our own hero's journey with courage and insight.

Rediscover the timeless story that shapes all of us in On the Hero's Journey, an accessible introduction to one of the most influential ideas in storytelling, from world-renowned mythologist Joseph Campbell. Part of a new, beautifully designed series on Campbell's core motifs, this pocket-size gem offers a deeper understanding of how the stories we tell shape our lives.

Campbell recognized the hero's journey to be the "monomyth," the universal pattern found in lore, legends, and rituals across cultures -- from ancient texts to contemporary films. Whether our hero is battling dragons or confronting inner demons, the adventure unfolds in three stages -- Separation, Initiation, and Return -- and draws from the collective unconscious to mirror the cycles of cultural evolution and the journey of the soul itself.

As Campbell writes, "Each time, there is the same problem: Do I dare?" With every call to adventure, the hero faces both the potential for bliss and the threat of annihilation. These daring initiations remind us that we too are invited to step forward and embrace our birthright -- if we are brave enough to act and humble enough to accept the help we are offered along the way.

This perfectly sized, collectible book is an ideal gift for anyone fascinated by mythology, storytelling, and the universal quest for meaning -- casual readers and lifelong Campbell fans alike. In the hero's journey, we find the blueprint for our own life's adventures, constantly beckoning us toward new horizons.

About the Author

Joseph Campbell (1904-1987) was a renowned American author and scholar of comparative mythology. His groundbreaking work The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) introduced the concept of the "hero's journey," a universal pattern found in myths across cultures. Campbell's theories were influenced by his studies in Europe, the work of Picasso and James Joyce, and Freud's and Jung's theories about the human psyche, as well as his lifelong interest in Native American cultures and his translation with Swami Nikhilananda of the Upanishads and The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna. In 1988, the PBS series The Power of Myth brought his ideas to a global audience, solidifying his legacy in the study of mythology.
