After a maiden voyage that established it as more than just a sci-fi spoof, The Orville continues to explore the weirder corners of the universe…and the complicated inner lives of its characters. Risking tonal shifts that less enterprising series wouldn’t date, this futuristic Seth MacFarlane vehicle deploys a unique mix of fantastic outer-space settings, mundane office situations, and occasionally bawdy humor to tackle real-world issues like physical disabilities and the stress of single parenting. Genre devotees are rewarded with cameos from sci-fi stars, while comedy fans enjoy searching for funny folks like Jason Alexander and Patrick Warburton beneath the alien makeup. Visually, the show dazzles, but its love for the form and resonant human (and alien) stories captures the true heart of the galaxy.
