Q: Is there a safety auto shut off feature?

A: According to the instructions, there does not appear to be a safety shut off for the burner. Nothing on the device indicates this either. I suggest you call Oster at 1-800-334-0759.

A: I have Asthma, and I am always on the alert for offgassing or burning( electrical) smells from new appliances. This Hot Plate had neither.

This hot plate does not get hot enough to boil water for pasta. Sauces will get hot enough, but water never boils, it’s just sort of steams along without bubbles.

Doesn’t work very well. Takes too long to heat up even on high. Takes twice as long to cook anything even on high setting. It literally took almost an hour just to boil water. Waste of time and money. I’d rather use the camping butane or propane stoves instead if this, at least they actually work and heats up way quicker then this one.

it heats up but doesn't get hot enough to boil water, had it on 30 mins and didn't get hot enough when on high setting. tried unplugging plugging back in different outlets nothing worked.

This single burner works fine, and it's a great option if you're heating foods that don't require a lot of heat. I bought it to fry outside my kitchen (because of the smell), and unfortunately, it wasn't powerful enough. It is easy to clean though and can be the product you are looking for.

looks great. works ok. a lot of missing information. power usage? what are the actual temperature settings in degrees? takes ten minutes to boil 2 cups of water, much slower than gas or microwave. not a problem if you have lots of time in the morning. another option to use, but does not replace gas burner or microwave unless you have lots of time and patience.

It’s a heavyweight hot plate that is very sturdy so it won’t fall apart on you. But it never came to a boil. I had it on high to try to boil my baby bottles while on the go but it never boiled sadly.

Can't boil water

I got this with the sole intention of making pasta with it. At first it took around 45 min to boil water, then an hour, but now after about a month of use it can't get hot enough at all. The water all evaporates away before it boils. This is when the hot plate is at its hottest setting. Maybe mine is just defective, but a hot plate that can't boil water is completely useless. This product is garbage.

I almost didn't buy this because of the large amount of negative reviews. Then I read them. Let's be clear. This is a 120V 900W appliance. Your normal electric range is 240W. My kettle pulls 1500W. The numbers tell you what it can do. It is NOT a stove replacement. It will cook eggs and brown meat. It did a great job on a dozen eggs that in a pan that was too big for it. Boiling water takes A LOT of energy. If you don't have a range, and you need to boil water, you need to find a different solution. But this thing does what it's designed to do very well.
