Description

Book Synopsis

Sportsman. Political Boss. Beer Baron. The larger-than-life Otto Stifel of St. Louis wielded political influence, won the 1904 World's Fair Handicap--the biggest American horserace at the time--with his prized filly Colonial Girl, had a role in the formation of a third major league for baseball and played a part in the infamous Black Sox scandal.

This detailed biography describes many obstacles faced by Stiefel, including a governor's crusade against his beloved horse-racing industry and strong anti-German sentiment during World War I. As a brewer, Stifel also was severely affected by Prohibition. Even then, it appeared that he had found a way to weather the storm and had won the Republican primary for a congressional seat in 1920. His sudden and shocking death left many questioning why it had occurred at all.
